    Good for Nothin Rooster!

cert I am 100% certain it was a cat and 99% certain it was My cat because of the minimal damagee that was done, just some torn out feathers and minor scratches around the combs of two hens. I figured if it was a fox or dog or ermine or predator bird they'd be dead or severely injured. I have...

    Good for Nothin Rooster!

Not yet, no, but as a kid, I did have a whole flock of Canadian geese attempting to thwart my efforts of me trying to catch their babies and I thought their efforts were hilarious and didn't compare to mine.. so a lil ol hen compared to a whole angry flock of hissing geese with wings spread...

    Good for Nothin Rooster!

I guess Ive heard people in different forums talk about their roosters being protective and they are definitely known to be aggressive toward humans (I've personally seen videos) and then there's the whole cock fighting thing, so why do they save their aggression for when it really matters?

    Good for Nothin Rooster!

wow I really misunderstood then... maybe I got the wrong idea because they will fight each other to death over pecking order and are known to get aggressive towards humans which I've heard was fairly common. So why not a measly cat..? the hens sure make plenty of alarming noises when threats are...

    Good for Nothin Rooster!

So I thought the whole purpose of a rooster, well, other than making babies, was to protect the flock. Well my stupid cat decided to have a blast attacking my chickens today while I was gone and two of my hens have minor injuries, a little bit of blood above their beaks and the poor things...

    Door to coop

I'm curious for ideas for the door to the coop, that is Not powered by electricity And also doesn't require manually being open and closed twice a day. I was curious about hanging something in front of the door like a flap of carpet that they can push their way through in and out of. I am aware...

Thank you very much for your input. He is a Cochin bantam, about 16 weeks old. I hold him and "cuddle" him all the time lol and have since he was about 8 weeks old. I really hope he's not going to totally change into a jerk...

    What happened..?

So this hen he attacked is actually in fact my dominant hen, by far. In her second day in the coop, she told the rooster who was boss, (and it was his home to begin with!) I saw her jump kick him and make him sqwak real good so he rarely messes with her.. Oh and he is a bantam cochin, while she...

    What happened..?

Chicken behavior always fascinates me and I'm always trying to figure it out. So, today I picked up a hen to hold and I could tell my rooster was concerned for her and watching me closely. He's been growing more concerned over the weeks when I pick one up, he used to not care at all, but now he...

    Free ranging cat and chickens?

I totally understand where you're coming from and when I lived in the city I would never consider letting my cat outside. But I live out in the woods now and I have 5 Acres and my neighbors are really spread out and some have roaming cats of their own.. I have her collared and microchipped...

    Free ranging cat and chickens?

And just to paint a clearer picture, after three months now with chickens, the cat mainly just walks around the yard (when she's home from her adventures) and the chickens are nearby and she could care less about them and they're mildly concerned about her. She's not stalking them anymore, just...

My first chicken loss to a hawk

Thank you very much for the dose of reality, I was hoping there was some magical secret solution that someone can tell me that I wasn't thinking of. LOL I knew, this was a risk, especially living in the woods in Alaska, people lose their chickens to bears and fox and of course predatory Birds...

    Free ranging cat and chickens?

Before I acquired chickens I have my cat, who loves the outdoors and hunting rodents and small birds. When I first got my chicks of course she was super interested and stalked them, which I discouraged and chased her off. I only saw her full on chase after them once and I yelled and chased her...
