I can attest that bio filters do work for ducks, but you have to go big and a generously sized UV light is key. I have 2,000 gallons, 4 geese, 20 odd call ducks, and crystal clear water. It's adjacent to my patio so i need it to be pleasant. Clearing leaves from the pump is the only...
All flock is better yes. I think grass starts to become a real necessity too. Assuming your lawns not treated you could dig a sod chuck daily for them to pick at, good boredom fixer too in case that's from picking each other.
Sometimes big breed birds grow faster than their feathering.
Otherwise, that's likely not really enough room unless they're outside all day, at this age they are ready for grass and exercise. I'd be careful about feeding them too high a protein feed as they are a bit prone to leg issues.
Hi Shaw and company, long time no see! Been a busy year. I just stopped by to see how the ducks are. Looks like yours have multiplied nicely.
I finally got the Art Lundgren babies I've been hoping to get for ages.
Anyway, hi again!
I just really wanted some covered run space in a really windy spot so they could move around in the long snowy season. I'd seen so many great hoop coop designs I got inspired to make it work somehow. Stumbled into a great deal on the clear poly carb panels and got great help here from aart...
Fingers crossed you get that warm up! Now if we start talking ducks I'll be contemplating building them nicer digs as well. Their outdoor run could be bigger and nicer but I'm space squeezed. Hmmm.
Hi again @aart ! Yes it's great to have the extra indoor space.
That tail... well it's usually curled up but does seem a bit long. He's a kangal but I call him a kangal-roo because it's the thickest tail I've ever seen. Maybe he'll grow into it!
Hoop coops are not expensive or difficult to build. This half design was a bit more of both, and somewhat risky. But the regular kind isn't bad and so nice. I'm doing one on a 2ft knee wall for a greenhouse in March.
Thank you, they really are a delight to see scratching and doing chicken stuff on nasty weather days. The roosters have enough room to coexist nicely too, which in this climate could have been a problem!
I just wanted to give an update on my half(quarter?) cattle panel hoop covered run. I didn't do everything I'd hoped of course, but it's working out well. I thought I needed to completely waterproof the ceiling joints where the panels meet but there's really no need as a run. Slow drips in...
Now there's blue and silver snowy?? And appleyard have green heads except when they have brown heads??
My daughter would say you guys are trolling me. :lau
Yeah call colors are almost impossible!
They might be too wobbly on round roosts that size. Could be a flight path issue. Or they are young and haven't started roosting yet.
Pics of the roosting area in the coop would be very helpful.
You can also buy human B-3(niacin) pills and add one to a gallon of water for drinking. Just don't get the "flush free" version. The sooner you get him on it the better his results will be. And yes swim time!
