My Abigail has these red spots on both of her legs. She doesn't pick at them or seem bothered, but I am worried about them.
Anyone know what this is? Is it contagious? What do I do???
Thanks for your input! I am so worried.
I am not handy AT ALL, and not terribly creative, so I bought coops that I made from kits. But our place in the mountains has us really nervous about predators (in particular, raccoons, coyotes, or worst case, black bears), so we are hoping to come up with ideas we can ADD to the coop to make...
Do I need to worry if these get near the coop? We found mice in our basement, and apparently they were after the laying mash. Can they or will they hurt the girls? Do you think the girls might eat the ants or little spiders? I worry about spraying for bugs because what if they carry poison...
We are planning to take our chickens with us on vacation, but it's going to require a two-hour drive. I'm planning to transport them in the brooder. It will be a little bit of a tight fit (in the brooder) while in the car, and I've never tried to move them before. We are also going to change...
Hubby & I are thinking of buying a vacation property in our local mountains. There's a good-sized back yard on the place we are looking at, and we plan to go for at least a week at a time during the summer & vacations, so would bring our dogs -- and hopefully the chickens!
So we will have a...
Okay, so I read on another thread that sometimes when a hen is molting, she stops laying. It seems that one or two of my hens are molting -- it's hard to tell exactly -- it's the downy feathers underneath that they are losing -- they look the same on top. One of them is definitely my EE -- and...
These are our first chickens & our first eggs. Our girls just started laying last week, and I am just overwhelmed at how beautiful their eggs are!!! When I found a blue one today, I was so excited!!!
I had to clip my girls' wings this afternoon -- something I was hoping to avoid. But one of the girls jumped up on the fence this afternoon -- and if she went over, she could be in danger from the neighbor's dog.
I used this diagram for help:
I only trimmed about an inch and half off of...
I love it. I live in one of the most pretentious places on Earth, but even here, chickens are becoming the cool thing! I just look at this cover photo and think to myself that this girl is about to get chicken poo on her designer coat.
Enjoy...
1. Do I HAVE to block off the nesting boxes??? Can't I just clean them up later when they are ready to start laying?
2. Their feeder & water is in the attached run. During the day they go in & out so it isn't an issue. Once they are out there at night, and I close them in for the night...
I hope this was the best place to post this question. Please forgive the rookie mistake, if not.
I know I could usually add wood chips to the pile, and I definitely want to add the chicken droppings to the compost pile. But I thought I better check with the experts! Seems like I'm changing...
It's a warm & gorgeous day here today & I want to take the girls outside with me for a bit while I do some yard work. They haven't been in their coop yet (they aren't quite old enough yet, but almost), so I thought I'd let them explore the coop, and also explore the yard. I'm a little...
I am a new chicken-Mama -- had our girls for 3 weeks now: an auracana, a golden-laced wyandotte, a buff orpington & a barred rock. I am positively in love with them! They are so much fun!!! I'm reading obsessively, and have found a couple of interesting blogs that I really enjoy. Would...
I've been a mama of 3 chicks for 2 whole weeks -- so I'm pretty new. I adore them & try to hold them a lot -- I want them to grow up & be friendly with people. But they don't seem to like being held one bit! They peep & complain and try to get away.... is that pretty normal? What are good...
