Looking good! My only idea is to use a larger sandbox. I have 8 quails and I use a cat litter pan. I find they like to be in there together for a communal bath. I agree with the others regarding the hardware cloth and I love the auto light!
I live in Southern California so it's warm here for the most part. I was really surprised by how long it took them to start laying. Maybe the absence of any males was a contributing factor.
Same here for the "dirt bath". I buy all purpose sand from the hardware store and add DE. I use a kitty litter pan for my 8 quails and they love it. Fill the pan about 1 inch deep with sand plus 1/4 cup DE. I change the sand once a week.
Sorry, I have no advice about hatching eggs. I bought my...
I only have hens. I was afraid the males might make too much noise. They have been doing fine without a male. Only aggression I see between them is when I put fresh sand in their sand box as they want to be the first to bathe! It's more just chasing each other out of the sand box.
Through my research before getting the quails, I thought I would get eggs when they reached 6-8 weeks. Not true...they just stated laying yesterday at 15 weeks!! It was a long wait but we are excited to finally collect some eggs.
Hang in there. We just got our first egg today...they are 15 weeks old. When I brought them home at 3 weeks old back in August, I was certain I would see eggs by mid-September. They have been on turkey starter at 28% protein since I brought them home. The shorter days are also a factor so...
Hi everyone! I had 2 chickens a few years ago and now I have 8 Coturnix quails. I decided to give quails a try and I've been very happy with them so far! We got our first quail egg today! So excited that they are finally laying eggs.
I feed my Coturnix Turkey Starter (28% protein). They have been eating the same food since I brought them home at 3 weeks old. I offer some treats once in awhile (mealworms, broccoli, romaine lettuce and corn on the cob).
