Back in June, I got two Black Australorps and a New Hampshire Red at a local swap. The Australorps are now about 22 weeks old and the NH Red is about 19 weeks old but I haven't seen any eggs yet. Should I be worried? When I had Red Stars I think they started laying at around 18-19 weeks.
If I got four eggs from four hens on the shortest day of the year (while it was snowing), can I count on getting eggs all winter. Or will the production go down when it gets really cold here in New England?
You could try adding a solar panel recharging unit. That way the battery can recharge slowly all day and hopefully never get so low it won't work. Just an idea.
I just installed an automatic opener using a 12v DC linear actuator, timer switch, small 12v DC battery and a solar panel to keep the battery charged. I got the battery at Radio Shack and everything else online. The total cost was around $250. Installation involved connecting four wires...
When I went out to collect the eggs this morning I saw that some wild turkeys were hanging out around our coop/run having a chat with our four hens. I ran back inside to get my camera and the turkeys stayed for a good 20 minutes. The hens were quite talkative but didn't seem nervous at all.
I also have 1/2" square hardware wire as the bottom of my run. The run is not portable so I just threw down some clean soil and peat moss a few inches thick and that seems to be enough. The hens still scratch but don't go deep enough to get to the hardware wire plus I get great drainage with the...
I have four red sex links hens that are about 8 1/2 months old and have been laying consistently for about 4 months. I have been seeing more loose feathers lying around the coop/run the past couple of days but none of the birds have any bald spots. I was wondering if they could be starting to...

Did you also know that the "sell by" date stamped on the carton is six weeks from the date they are packaged but gives no indication when the eggs were laid.

They have access to organic layer pellets all day, get vegetable scraps from the kitchen every few days and dandelion greens and other leafy weeds hand fed to them every time the kids walk by the...

Hello all, I'm new to BYC. My town has pretty straight forward regulations for keeping chickens. One of the requirements is to notify all abutters within 300 feet of our property line (that came out to 52 certified letters we had to send) and appear before the town Board of Health before the...
