Rooster: is he lazy or sick?

They’ve all roosted for the night and I don’t think they’d be very happy if I went out and disturbed them. His poop seems normal and all I’ve noticed is that the back of his legs look pretty red (although someone said this had something to do with mating and just this week he has started trying...

Rooster: is he lazy or sick?

Hope this is in the right place. Penelope my only rooster (he was a surprise, so excuse the girl name!) constantly lies down to eaither eat scratch or poop, and he’s the only one I’ve noticed doing it. He doesn’t seem lethargic, is crowing non stop and loves running really fast when he gets to...

Terrified there will be a power cut!

Thank you everyone for your advice. I think they’re going to be okay, there will be 8 of them in there and the power has never been off for longer than an hour. I might put a hot water bottle in with them or a glass jar of hot water for the first week or so just in case. Thanks for all the advice!

Terrified there will be a power cut!

Normally there are no power cuts in my area, but recently there have been about 4 in the last month due to a fire in the building that supplies my small town with electricity. If the power goes off during the day that’s okay, I know ways to keep the chicks warm. But I’m so scared it’ll go off...

    Raising multiple breeds?

I’m getting pullets only, our local hatchery sexes the hens and I don’t think roosters will be right for us.

    Raising multiple breeds?

Just a thought- would having 3 bantams and 3 standards be any better? Or having more bantams than standards? With the space I’ve got I can probably add a few bantams as they need less room anyway - but I want to keep 3 standards so that I’ve got the big eggs as well.

    Raising multiple breeds?

Thank you both for the quick replies! I don’t think I’ll be able to have another coop in the garden so I’ll either have to rethink getting bantams or just hope for the best and if not rehome them to a good home. Hopefully with the large amount of space and then being allowed time each day to...

    Raising multiple breeds?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, sorry if it’s not! In the springtime we will be getting 5 chicks from a local hatchery. I’m currently planning on getting one Wyandotte bantam, one cuckoo Maran bantam, a cream legbar, a barnevelder and a blacktail. Does anyone know if this will be...
