Thinking of switching to verticle nipples. How do I train?

@blackdog043 thanks so much! I'm pretty sure I have a drill bit that size lying around. I shudder to think of those expensive waterers at the feed store that just hold dirty water! I am still upset about how I shelled out $30 for a 3 gallon size when I was a newbie. Ugh... Live and learn.

Thanks @blackdog043 and @penny1960! I just bought a pack of 10 off Amazon. So excited for clean water!

Thinking of switching to verticle nipples. How do I train?

@rosemarythyme my chicks look to be about a week. I bought them from a local feed store and didn't ask age. And yeah, they are super little, but I have them in a brroder inside my house.

@penny1960 are the horizontal ones the one with the little bowl attached?

Thinking of switching to verticle nipples. How do I train?

I hear how wonderful vertical nipples are and I'm considering switching. Right now I have a regular ol' automatic waterer that I made myself with a bucket and metal pan. I'm tired of cleaning it out. I live in a sandy area and as soon I turn around after I clean it, it's dirty again! I need...

Can you make chick grit from regular grit?

It's granite, but the chunks look bigger, so wasn't sure if it was ok for chicks. How would I crush it down?

Can you make chick grit from regular grit?

That sounds like a wonderful idea! I bet they would have fun with that! But, I live in the desert (northern AZ) and dandelion greens are just not a thing out here.... Greens in general, actually. I'll try to find something similar though. Thanks so much!

Can you make chick grit from regular grit?

I have a bag of grit that I give to my marure hens already, but I recently got 8 chicks and was wondering if I could crush the grit down further to use as grit for chicks. Anyone tried this? Tips?

Straw in the run? Need advice

I really feel like I averted a disaster. Thank you all so much for your advice. I am currently renovating their run, so I may add a roof instead of straw. I'll try to post pics when I can. I'm way in rural Az and don't have much internet connection to upload huge files. Thank you so much for the...

Straw in the run? Need advice

Hi, I live in Northern Arizona, where sand and clay are everywhere and not much foliage. I have a run with dirt, but when it gets rainy, there is mud everywhere and the chickens get super muddy. So, just wondering if anyone has the same issue and used straw to keep the run mud-free? What are...

Need help with sexing 4 w/o Buff Wyandottes

Thank you all so much. I am not too disappointed with Siri's funny comb, just more about the fact that he's boy.... Oh well... I plan to get 4 more pullets soon so hopefully they will all be girls.

    Tractor Supply Chick Days 2018

Checked yesterday and they had straight run gold laced Wyandottes, straight run leghorns, assorted straight run bantams, and Rhode island red pullets. That's in northern NM.

Need help with sexing 4 w/o Buff Wyandottes

Thanksyou so much! Well now I'm not sure what they are now! They were labeled as Wyandottes, so I guess only time will tell! The second one doesn't have a comb coming out yet.

Need help with sexing 4 w/o Buff Wyandottes

I recently bought what I though were 2 Buff Wyandotte pullets from a hatchery and now I'm not so sure both are pullets. They are both about 4 weeks old. One (Siri) started to grow a comb and the other one hasn't (Alexa). So now I'm not sure. I read you can't really tell at that age, but is the...

Hi there, semi-new to this site

Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself. I have had chickens (for eggs) for a few years now, but I seem to always be learning something new about them. Recently, I had a lice infestation and I googled it and this site came up. I found a lot of really great ideas about treating them and other...
