I wonder why the call them Heritage?
There is nothing heritage about them.
They look like X Rocks in the picture too me.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.
I understand your concerns about the treatment of your animals.
Just the thought of a poor creature born and bread to only live for 8 weeks for the sole purpose of being processed and consumed is unnatural and not humane but we still do it.
We as humans love our pets to no avail but these...
Has anyone used this setup for their meaties. https://www.gqfmfg.com/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=63
Would have to use a Cornish X for fast grow out to keep it filled and cycle every 4 weeks.
It's a little pricey. ANY THOUGHTS.
I,m going to cross a New Hampshire red with a red laced cornish standard breed.
I picked the NH for it's faster growth rate, My NH's are almost twice the size @ the same age as my barred rocks.
They are all chicks right now.
I will pick out the birds with the best qualities and hope I can...
I,m trying the same as you 5 Acre, I'll be using red laced cornish standards (wish they were heritage breed) with New Hampshire red roo.
Hoping to get a little faster growth rate from the NH side. My NH are twice the size and same age as my bared rocks. They just grow faster.
It will be a long...
The last run of barred rocks I had I ended up getting 2 roos. 1 showed himself early the other 1 looked just like the 1 you have now. He didn't develope quite as fast as the other I would say a good month behind the other.
If I had to guess I would say it's a roo.
Let me know if I'm wrong.
Are...
I have a 4x6x6 coop with 6 hens and 1 roo, they have plenty of room. I heat with a little electric heater with a built in fan, keep it about 50 degrees. I only use the heat cause I have a 30 gal water storage for chicken nipples.
My Barred Rocks came from a hatchery also, they look nice and plump. I'm going to check out the haritage breeds for my meaties.
Thanks for the advice guys and girls.
Doese anyone harvest Barred Rocks?
I have a huge Rooster (Sinbad) and some very plump hens I would like to use as breading stock, if it would be worth it.
any help would help.
That's a good sized area for 5 chickens, I don't think they'll rough it up too bad. The goat will distroy it quick. My neighbor had some goats and they are dirty, nasty, and smelly animals.
His would go inside thier house and poop, pee, and roll in it, I guess they like smelling really bad. Not...
THANKS MOM,
I've been slowly reintroducing her back in the flock, letting her hang out with them. You can see the pecking order step in, it seems like a few of the hens push her arround a little bit
then they all hang out like allways.
She's still not up to speed but she's getting better every...
One of my hens wing was ripped out of socket by a dog. She didn't stand for 2 days. I had to put her on her feet or she would lay on her side.
Now shes standing and walking.
I lifted her wing up and could see the joint popped out.
you could try feeling and squeezing jently and when she moans a...
The lable of the Rooster Booster should tell you if you can put it on open wounds.
I would think just clean the wound and put some neosporin on it.
Hope this helps.
One of my RIR walked over to my neighbor's house and got attacked by their dog. He ripped her wing out of socket.
I thought I was going to have to put her down, she was passing out and gasping for air.
I decided to try to save her and pushed her wing back in the socket and taped it tight to her...
I've had hawks sitting on my coop watching my chickens standing in the open just watching them back. They could have taken one any time they wanted to. Instead one grabbed a squirrel that hangs out stealing scraps that I give my chickens. The have been arround all summer.
I guess they're not...
