I found a dead chicken in my coop this morning. It's head was off. What could that have been? They were outside in my outer area that has roosts and chicken wire all around. However from two feet up the wire is about 2"x2". I am thinking they got in from there. Anyway, would like to know...
I am preparing to cover my outdoor area of my chicken coop again this year to keep the wind and snow out. I used 6 ply last winter but even as they implied that it was clear, it wasn't very clear. I was wondering if 4 play clear plastic would be better. Is it strong enough? I could use some...
I have a Black Australorp rooster and hens that lay blue or olive color eggs. I am thinking about hatching some eggs this Spring from my flock. Any idea what color eggs the hens will lay? It would be nice to have an idea before I hatch these eggs.

I have an Australope Rooster and some Easter Eggers and some Oliver egger pullets. I am wondering if I choose to use their eggs for hatching, what color eggs will they possibly lay when their chicks are mature. Any guesses?
I picked up my chicks on Monday. I had gotten their brooder set and heat on Sunday with a reptile 150 degree lamp and my new Brinsea Chick Brooder. I stopped at the brooder before going to get the chicks and found that the Reptile lamp was inadequate to heat the brooder that day. I put in the...
The electricity went off for three hours last week during the night. I woke up to my incubator reading 80 degrees. I covered the incubator with a blanket until the power came back up. I'm hoping the eggs will still be ok. Anyway, when I went to check the days to hatch, my Nurture Right 360...
I saw a lot of discussion about electric fence to keep dogs out on the Pests Forum but there was no discussion about how to do it. I mean, how high off the ground do you put the first wire and do you need more than one wire to keep dogs out? I have an on-going problem with the neighbor's dogs...
I have been feeding my chicks medicated feed since they were hatched on our farm and did not received inoculations. I have chicks that are 4 weeks old, another hatch that is 1 week old and will be having some hatch in about three weeks. I am finding that medicated feed is harder to find that...
I am ready to do another hatch. The incubator was running fine with the temp at 99.5. I put the eggs in and noticed that the heat button was hot flashing. So it was not heating up. When I take the lid off and set it aside, the heat starts working. When I put the lid back on, it stops. What...
I went from humidity too low to 78% now. I had about 7 chicks hatch at the same time and it drove the humidity up. It has been about five hours and they are still very wet. Should I be worried or is it normal for them to take so long to dry? They temp is 99.5 so they should be warm enough.

I just discovered that Bantam eggs can hatch earlier than chicken eggs. I am in the process of incubating Bantam (13) with (9) chicken eggs. What will happen if I stop the turner at 16 days?
I have an IncuTherm thermometer that is around two years old. I am comparing the temperatures in my new Nurture Right 360 to that thermometer and am getting a difference of 1.1 degrees. I don't know which is correct. Should I purchase another one to determine which one is correct? Or will I...
I am sending my roosters to the processer today. They are just about 6 months old. I am wondering if I should leave them whole or have them cut them up. They only charge 50 cents more to cut them up.
I am getting ready to send a few roosters to the processor. I have about five that need to go. Just checking to make sure I don't send a pullet there.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
