Chick suddenly died-- Is 90 degrees too cool for a 5 day old chick?

Hi All! She was 5 days old and she had a foot/leg injury (it looked like her middle toe wouldn't straighten on one foot, or that her leg also would not extend past a 90 degree angle). We didn't move her to the brooder until 36 hours later, and she seemed to be doing very well except for the...

    Assisted hatch

I spent the last few hours assisting the hatch of one of my chicks. He was stuck, 48 hours after the first external pip, and he got about an inch unzipped before he got stuck somehow. I removed little pieces of shell to clear enough away and eventually, after more than 50% of the shell was...

    48 hours after external pip

Hi guys! This little guy externally pipped and got his eggshell unzipped around his face about an inch, but stopped for some reason and hasn’t made progress in 24 hours. It’s been 48 hours since the external pip. Someone suggested assisted hatching which I started, and we were able to free him...

    First Pip was Wednesday Afternoon....

Hi all! First pip was Wednesday afternoon sometime. :thumbsup Another chick pipped on the 29th in the early hours, and hatched this morning around 3.30am, so almost exactly 24 hours. :celebrate The 1st chick, as I mentioned, pipped the 28th mid day, making it almost 48 hours now. :confused...

Help! Hours Old Chick-- is this normal?

Hi! This little one hatched around 3.30 this morning-- making her roughly 6-7 hours old. She is my first ever hatchling! How should she be behaving? She has been very stumbly, only able to stay on her feet for moments before she gets stuck laying on her back for an hour or so. I have...

    HELP!!!

1st chick finally came out of his shell!! I don’t know how long ago but I’m pretty sure it’s only been a few hours The chick must have kicked off the water dish lid and was laying down on his back and looked like he was squished next to another egg (head bent and stuff) My mother in law opened...

Day 24, what of the non-Hatcher’s?

Hi all! We are super excited tonight, watching one of our set pipping himself out of his shell. Just the early stages— he popped last night the first time and now he’s got enough of the shell out that we can see his little face when he pips :jumpy There was another egg that had an external pip...

    WE HAVE A HATCH?!?!

Today is day 24, and last night we had our first pip! We woke up this morning to see that the one who pipped yesterday, must have waited a few (like 8) hours and then pipped again to pop off a piece of their shell overnight. (we were worried he was not in the right place for the air cell-- if he...

    FIRST EVER PIP!!

Oh my god! Have we done It?! Are we there?! Is this our first pip? :wee Is this an obvious sign to say the inner membrane is broken? And, what now? Based on the beak pip position, is he ok? That air cell line might not be accurate. I’m hoping the air cell pulled back enough to that area where...

    ROTTEN EGG

Hi! We have a few eggs in the incubator, and I have been getting a whiff of something (not pungent) every now and again when we open the incubator. (just a couple days) Now that we are on Day 21/22, they have been in lock-down since 18. I think the smell has gotten a bit stronger. We went...

TEST is chick in egg dead or alive?

I read about a test that may be able to clarify if a chick is dead or alive in its' shell. What are your opinions? Does this work? Or is there another way to check? ***Will water on the eggs or the egg submerged in water harm the baby chicks inside?*** Day 20/21 (not sure, as we set the eggs...

    Trouble Hatching

Are all breeds hard to monitor through incubating? We have a group of Speckled Sussex eggs, we have not seen air cell growth and it seems like we have trouble seeing the air cell also. Could this be due to the color? I read that a lot of others can see much more clearly, can identify the air...

    I Dropped An Egg

Day 18 :hit We were delaying lock-down to help the air cells grow more, as we had the humidity at 75-90% for the first 2 weeks accidentally.:barnie I put the cracked egg back in the incubator for now. What do I do with it? Is it possible that it may survive?:fl The drop was about 10" onto a...

Hi All! First hatch, and while I feel like we've learned so much, I think we may have learned a little too late. :hmm :jumpy I have 7 fertile (and very active!:wee) baby chicks growing. They are speckled Sussex, and the egg colors are all dark and make candling hard, as we're not able to...

    Help

I added rice to my incubator to lower the humidity (first in a sock, then I just emptied the rice onto the tray along with the eggs as I read the more surface area the better for moisture removal). Is that ok? I feel like I should dump that out and clean the tray again for the eggs.
