White band of missing head feathers

Hello BYC and thank you in advance! My 8 month old Buff Orpington has this odd white band of missing feathers on her head. I don’t notce others picking or any excessive scratching on her part. She does have periodic bouts of Mareks but so far gets by fine with some occasion balance issues...

Vet visit or wait it out!?!

Wynonna (6 month old Silver Wyandotte) has been limping for 3 weeks. Some days better than others but basically avoids any weight bearing on her left leg. No visble signs of bumble foot or break etc. She’s eating, drinking, foraging and interacting normally. No lethargy or other signs. I just...

    Americauna Connie or Connor??

Hi All, This is our 3 1/2 month old Americauna who has always displayed roosterish tendencies but the comb isn't really big or red? Maybe the saddle feathers will make the case? Thanks in advance for your opinions!

    Mendocino Plant ID Help

Hi Nor Cal Peeps.... Today I let my 3 month old girls free range for the first time here in the redwood forest and they all made a b-line for this ground cover plant with tiny yellow flowers. They are nuts over it. I was able to ID the clover and dandelions but have no clue what this is. Can...

First time free ranging - Is this poisonous?

Hi All, I let my 3 month old girls loose into an open area in the forest (northern ca, mendocino) and they all started devouring this low ground cover plant with tiny yellow flowers. Since I've already had a scare with them going for foxglove and bracken fern I feel so nervous about the...

    Living with Mareks

At least most of my newby chicken mysteries are making sense now (sadly). We have 5 girls (?) all 11 weeks old. New coop, new flock so we assume when we added 2 week old Della (Delaware) to our 4 she must have been infected from the feed store. She showed symptoms starting at 3 weeks and I...

10 week old buff Orpington injured cant walk

Dear Helpers, On Monday morning we found Buffy had been wedged/trapped underneath a protruding branch in coop all night. I had to extract her and she was unable to stand. I took her to the vet for X-ray and nothing broken so vet said most likely soft tissue damage. The vet gave her pain meds and...

Two month olds ate a bracken fern!!

We just made a 40 foot run for protected forest free ranging and there were a couple of ferns which the gobbled up right away. I now see they are on the poisonous list !?! Is there anything I should do for them? They seem fine so far and ate it about 3 days ago. :( Thank you so much!

Afraid I am raising “soft chicks”?

Hello All and thank you in advance, My 5 chicks (EE, Buff O, Wyd, P rock, Del) are now six weeks old. They are in the brooder in our house at night and in the backyard coop/run for 3-4 hours a day. We live in Mendocino - Northern California coast. I have had a 100watt bulb on all the time in...

General Questions re: one month olds

Hello All ... I often find myself wondering if I'm doing things right. I have a small batch of questions that I'd love feedback on. I figured rather than a bunch of threads I could ask in one? Hope this is ok! 1) I have been using pine chips in their brooder? Is there another material they...

1 month old Delaware - Head Injury?

Hello, I am posting again about Della because I am wondering if she may have sustained a head injury. I have been searching my mind and there was a time at about 2 weeks old that I was transporting her with a screen over the box and it fell on her. It didn't seem that heavy but she chirped...

    Treats for 1 month chicks

Hello All, I am trying to ingratiate myself into these chicks lives and would like to find something other than chick scratch as treats. They go nuts over that but I believe it should be limited to a handful a day? (I have 5 birds). I’ve tried the scrambled eggs several times only to be met with...

Something just not right with 1 mo old Della

Hello everyone, i have five chicks all diff breeds. My Delaware is just not as active as the others. She spends much more time under the lamp and while she does eat and drink (and is getting plump) she kind of lumbers around and often chooses to eat and drink while sitting. She doesn’t seem to...

Protracted vent in 1mo old Delaware?

Hello, I have 5 chicks who are almost a month old and I just noticed some redness (maybe bits of blood?) at the base of tail feathers below vent and maybe a protracted vent. (Pic attached) I have been watching them and no one seems to be pecking at her nor have I seen her peck at herself. All of...

Advice on handling an aggressive chick (rooster?)

Hello BYC gurus, This is my first post so thank you in advance to any who can help. I have five 2 1/2 week old chicks. The americauna grew so much faster and has feathers almost fully formed. She is very aggressive towards other 4 smaller chicks. She flys at them and lands on their backs with...
