I’m still new as well but I can tell you that my rooster takes good care of my hens. If they holler for any reason, fighting or scared of something, then he comes running. He won’t put up with hens fighting but usually it’s because they are figuring out the pecking order. Could be that chick...
I have 4 hens that lay everyday and they all lay in the same nest box so don’t think they each need one for themselves. Lol. I built 4 and I should have just built 2. But I have room to add more now that I’ve got new baby chicks hatching.
You could still build a style like that which would be more sturdy. I built mine after looking at all the different ones out there. It gave me some great ideas.
It would be okay if you free range and they go in it at night. That’s what mine do but we have lots of land for them to scratch around on. It would be small if they are kept up all the time.
I’ve only had hens for a year. Just started hatching chicks but I think that coop is a good set up. Is has all the gadgets to make it easy to clean and gather your eggs.
Update. We have 4 out of 6 eggs hatched. My hen that was nesting is what I call a speckled color Cochin. One egg was hers and her chick is black with a white dot on its head lol. The 3 others that have hatched came from my white hen which I think is a Wyandotte. One is black but the other two...
Unfortunately I didn’t. I’m new to this and just found a roo I thought was very pretty. Lol. I’ve had him about 4 months now and he’s just a great roo. Very protective of the hens but will run to me every time he sees me. He has a great personality. I was going for looks more than anything lol...
I think so too. Just by the research I’ve been doing since I started this post. I’ll keep looking. Thanks for all the help. I never knew about the difference in the feet. Lol.
I can’t wait to see what sex they are. I don’t want to mess with her too much since she is still setting but if the others haven’t hatched in a couple of days then I’ll get rid of them. They should all hatch by morning.
Thanks. I have a Cochin that got broody so we had six eggs under her. Two have hatched today and the chicks are both black. My Cochin is what I call speckled. Lol. Very pretty. Only one egg was hers though the others are from my other hens. All different breeds.
I did a little research after the first suggestion was Bielefelder and I’m thinking that’s what he is too. He wasn’t cheap but I think he was worth it.
