Setting up for Japanese Quail in the house

Hi Guys! I have chickens outside and now I want to have some Japanese quail in the house. The purpose would be for enjoyment and eggs! After much googling and consideration, I plan to get a large enclosure similar to a guinea pig or chinchilla cage for them, about 2'Hx2W'x7'L. It will have a...

Found a couple shell-less eggs under roosts

Went to lock up my girls after dark and found two eggs completely shell-less. One had a compete membrane with whites inside, the other looked like it was just a yolk with a thin membrane around it. I harvested a full amount of eggs earlier that day, so these seem like extra? Also, they normally...

Surprise! A hen that I thought was a rooster

I was convinced this was a rooster based on developing a HUGE wattle and comb early on! Much to my surprise, I caught this little lady sitting on eggs the other day! Talk about a pleasant surprise. :clap

Hens squatting for my husband and I!!!!

I got my chickens around March and most of them are right at laying age now. I've even gotten a few eggs so far! But the strangest thing is about a week ago I noticed some of the older hens started "squatting" with their heads down and wings slightly spread when I went to pet them. I thought...

Hi All, My chickens are nearing laying age and I had a question. How long do I stick with chick starter? The company I buy my feed from only has 2 kinds, chick starter and laying all non medicated. Can I do chick starter indefinitely + oyster shell supplement? Or do I HAVE to switch to layer...

How do you keep your chickens cool?

Fortunately, my coop is situated to where the entire run is shaded in the late afternoon sun when it's the hottest, but my chickens are still panting and looking really hot by the end of the day. I want to know how you guys keep your chickies cool in the summer!

    New Hampshire red, cockerel?

Hi guys! All my oldest are now around 10-12 weeks old now and while I have two confirmed cockerel, I am stumped over my NH Red. The wattle growth and thick legs have me thinking cockerel, but I'm unsure.

What age do most cockerels begin crowing?

I have at least two confirmed cockerel in my flock so far, despite buying from the pullet bins. Such is life. I am not allowed to have roosters per my city ordinance, so I will need to rehome them at some point. That point will probably be when they begin crowing. My oldest is a close to 10...

3-4 week old pullet head flicking

No other symptoms that I can tell, she's active/eating. No discharge, wheezing or signs of distress. Her crop is empty, and poops look normal. She's the only one doing this enough for it to be noticeable for me, should I worry? They're all on medicated chick starter.

    SLW chick

I have two SLW Wyandotte chicks from the same clutch. This one pictured has developed much slower than the other (had no tail forever), and is starting to get a dark pink comb. I'm afraid it might be a roo. It's about 3 wks old

The girls first full day outside

The coop isn't done yet, so we made a little temporary area for the babies to spend a full day outside with us while we work outside in the back yard. I was looking forward to this beautiful 70 degree day! They are happy as can be!

    Gapeworm symptoms and treatment?

So I came across some things online about gapeworm and the risks when chickens eat worms, and I'm freaking out now! My babies have eaten quite a few worms from the sod I've brought in for them in the brooder. What is the best treatment in case they contract gapeworm? I want to have it on hand...

    Pullets or no?

I plan to take some better pics this evening, but this is what I have on hand. A few of my more adventurous babies greeting me! I hope they are all pullets but I have suspicions of one or two being roosters based purely off attitude as they all pretty much look the same...
