These aren’t the best photos because you can’t see the tops of their heads, but these are my legbars from last year - Violet and Clementine had obvious light head spots. All four are girls. From my understanding, if you’re getting hatchery chicks, the head spot thing doesn’t hold true.

Here’s some updated photos of the chicks at 10 weeks old. I sold Prim and Indigo to a coworker, who confirms both are female.

They did send two extras, and all 8 I can confidently call pullets at this stage in their development, so I either got lucky with the extras they sent and they just happened to be pullets, or the extras this hatchery sends are doubles of what you order.

Purchased from the Chick Hatchery as sexed pullets along with some Crested Cream Legbars who were suspiciously colored but I can now call them pullets with confidence. Pretty sure BCMs are female as well but need reassurance! Katniss Rue Effie Effie again

When I was a brand-new, baby chicken keeper, I picked out chicks at TSC which included 2 Buff Orpingtons. This is what they grew up to be: Decidedly not Buff Orpingtons.

I definitely prefer chin flaps to wattles, plus my phone doesn’t try to correct it to “waddles”. 😂

I had two WITH head dots that are now, at four weeks, clearly female. There seems to be a pretty big variation with hatchery quality chicks.

Isn’t it the worst? :hit I had 2 silver spangled appenzeller spitzhauben chicks a few years ago and was in complete denial that they both were roos until I very clearly saw them attempting to crow.

I got 4 legbars from a hatchery a few weeks ago - two were dark in color with head spots and two lighter than those chicks, with no head spots. They all ended up feathering in salmon colored breasts, so I’m pretty confident that now, at 3 weeks, they’re all female. Day of shipment Today

Just a little follow up on this thread, all four chicks are currently feathering in beautiful salmon breasts, so despite their differences in appearance I feel confident they’re all pullets. :celebrate
