First timer. They say 20 weeks to first egg, and maybe on occasion at 18 weeks. My Wyandotte hen Rosie turned 16 weeks last Thursday, laid her first egg on Friday and one a day since then. Wow, what a girl!
I had 2 Americana chicks, one the size of the other four I had and one that was so small we named her Peanut, gave her vitamins and hoped for the best. They are 12 weeks now, can barely tell the difference in size. I wonder if she was just younger when I got them. Hope you have the same...
My first summer too, and it's going to be 100 in Minnesota today -- Yikes. I am freezing small blocks of ice and adding mealworms and other treats as it freezes. And I have a mister next to the pen (oh god don't get me wet!!) but it does keep the ground cooler too. They definitely don't want...
I'm kinda new myself, but my chicks are now outside and thriving. Don't you have access to a feed mill? It seems to me you're paying too much for things like the feeders, and I don't understand why you need two different types of feed. I was recommended to not do the medicated but that's your...
The coop accommodates up to 6, and although I spent a bit of money it still is lightweight and I'm worried that wind or storm could blow it over. Any suggestions on how to anchor it down? I'm thinking maybe a rough or strap across the top and anchored to ground.
I have 2 Ameracauna chicks also and had the same thing, except for pasty butt. One was so much smaller. I added vitamins to their water and at four weeks they are both thriving, although the one chick is still smaller, but developing normally otherwise and thinks she's a big guy! Try the vitamins
I have 2 Sappphire gems, 1 Wyandote and 2 Americaunas. When they got too big for the brooder setup in my spare room, we put plywood on the floor, on top of tarp, then brought in a large exercise pen, used Gorilla tape with 12" high strips of cardboard and taped each section of pen to floor...
I have five 4-week old chicks and with the lousy weather in Minnesota don't know when I can take them outside. They are feathered, active, but we've just now gone up to 50 degrees. The coop is ready and I do have an exercise pen I can put them in during the day. Suggestions?
