    Coop Page 4

Home Sweet Home This project has really challenged my remedial building skills...but it has been fun and a learning experience. I live in a neighborhood with an HOA that doesn't allow backyard chickens, so I'm trying to stay under the neighborhood radar. Fortunately for me, my lot backs up to a...

providing unmixed ingredients and letting hens choose a balanced diet?

In a similar, but different way...I'm contemplating doing a seed mixture supplemented with a protein mash. I recently switched to an organic grain-based diet that is custom mixed at the mill. It includes corn, oats, barley, wheat, flax, field peas, soy, and/or crab meal. What I've noticed is...

    Brooders!!!!!!! :D

I built mine out of those storage cube panels that you put together with the plastic connectors. In addition to the plastic connectors, I zip tied everything too. I put cardboard in the bottom and up the sides and filled it with equine pine and shavings. It worked out great. Because I have...

Chicken myths and old wives' tales, please!

Quote: My son cried when they killed the hen on Survivor....However, he was quite excited when I explained to him that he was smarter than each and everyone one of those folks on that show who thought you had to have a rooster for a hen to lay eggs.

    Egg collection helper

The rottie is obsessed with the eggs now. Last night she went and got one off the counter and was carrying it around in her mouth. I thought she had a cat toy...until I managed to extract the slobbery egg from her mouth.

This was the first one she's stolen and I suspect the only reason she hadn't eaten it was she hadn't yet had time to figure out how to crack it!

    Egg collection helper

I wish I had my camera with me to capture the guilty look on my rottweiler's face this morning. I was collecting eggs and had set one down while I closed everything back up. When I went to pick it up...it was gone! Sure enough when I found the rottie...she had that tell-tale guilty look on her...

I too want to include some fruit trees in my landscaping...I just haven't decided which ones. Fig trees do pretty well around these parts too, so that's going to be a must!
