One day I will size the Panic Door correctly

This is my 4th year In a row of raising chicks from Day 1 of arrival (2-3 days old) in a fenced off portion of my coop with mama heat pad, and on my 4th year in a row my plan to open “Chick Panic Doors” for them to meet the hens in their own terms went out the window within less than 30 seconds...

Is there anything wrong with these hens - white ears?

Maybe I’ve never paid attention to the area under/behind their eyes (is that their ear lobe?) where it is whitish. Is this normal? For some reason looking at my hens just now I wondered if this was usually red. Thanks!

Anything to worry about with these CLs

I bought 3 female cream leg bars, two of them have a dark head pattern than the 3rd this photo shows both pattens I have. They are 10 weeks old:

Training Chicks to use a ramp

I filmed this on Sunday and Monday. Today they are going in and out the coop like crazy. Hope this helps.

Friendly reminder - paint your hardware cloth

Painting hardware cloth black (suppose you could use any dark green, navy, etc, whatever you have left over from painting your coop) boosts chicken visibility, especially at distance on bright days, a lot!! with a small roller it only takes a few minutes to do your whole run.

Just caught a stray kitten, vet at 5 PM, any advice

Anyone want to hazard a guess how old she is? Hoping she is socializable. She has been hanging around our property (borders hundreds of acres of woods) and under our cars for several days, meowing very loudly for food. We already have a 10 year old cat and will have to introduce - I believe I...

Just covered my run, any issues doing so?0

It’s been very hot and sunny, and I finally covered my run. It’s enclosed in hardware cloth but never had a cover in it before for shade/rain. I put a tarpful or so of dry leaves I rake up from the yard or woods in each week, and each quarter I pile up 3-4 wheelbarrows that I shovel out (brown...

    Poop Free Chick Waterer

Here is a video I have made that I will be adding to a compilation of videos for what I consider to be a low stress, time non-intensive (illness notwithstanding) way to raise chicks. In this video I show how to introduce day old chicks to a vertical waterer. This can be used for any age chicks...

Anything you can tell me about my SLW?

This bird is 4 weeks and 2 days old. I guess for a hatchery bird I should not hold out any hope that she will look like this someday: Should I have any concerns on breed or gender? She is strong, the 2nd in command of this batch of chicks.

Video demonstrating 4 week old chick using panic doors to interact with hens

Tossed an extra corn in the cob in the run this evening and who decided to be brave and take a go for it but my Austra White pullet “Romeo”. this is my third generation with this method and I wouldn’t change a thing. The integration is completely stress free, once I’ve confirmed the chicks use...

    “Blue/black/splash” Andalusian and marans

Hello, Are the two chicks behind my austra white considered “splash” or do I need to wait to a certain age to know more? Currently 4 weeks old, the outside photo is from a few days back.

What's your flock size to rotation strategy

Been at this a few years now and after a rough winter/spring in the egg supply department, I'm reconsidering how I do it. Costs of chicks plus shipping drives egg prices through the roof but I do like having my own chickens for many reasons and "cheap eggs" isn't one of them. If I was OK just...

Guess I'm doing 2 batches this year .. Integration issues with younger birds?

As many know I use the MHP and integrate with hens at about 18-20 days of age. The 3 week old chicks have been with the hens now for 5 days - they can go to their side via panic doors any time they want but I basically only see them with the hens since a few hours after opening, they are always...

    How big garden protection fence?

I have a brand new “square foot garden” that is 4x8 not very big. I have always free ranged my chickens 1-3 times a week for a few hours at a time. After chasing the first group into my property a couple of times, in 2 years they’ve never again left my 1.3 acre lot even when I’ve left them out...

Repeated mature hen issues, is it me? the supplier?

I've been very happy with chicks from the only online vendor I've used. I like that they allow to pick single breeds in orders of 4-6 per year (Cackle, for example, must be ordered in the "small town" 3 pack or otherwise has a minimum 3 per breed). I like my flock of 7-9 chickens to all be...

20 day old chicks integrated with 1.5 and 2.5 year old hens

Same thing happened as last year, I opened my chick hatch door bu I forgot to size it a little smaller and within 3 minutes my Easter egger was in the chick run. So right after this photo I just opened up the man size door between the runs. There’s been 4-5 pecks but hens aren’t hunting down...

19 Days old, flock integration day

Waiting for them to show me that they go in and out of the coop (no stress, just check on them every 30-45 minutes to see if they are in or out, if they are in two checks in a row I toss them out, if they’re out two checks in a row I put them back in so as to ensure they’re getting water ... if...

    Feed for Egg Sensitivity?

Hello, My friend's mother decided a few months back she wants to raise chickens this year and has built a stunning coop. Mine is basically trash lumber that is 100% functional for chickens, but hers rivals the most beautiful posted on this website. I am really impressed when some of y'all take...

15 days old - switched to hen waterers - integration to flock in a few days

15 days old, switched them to horizontal nipples today. This is one of my hen buckets. When they come off heat a couple weeks this will go outside in the run. These champs are really feathering out after a 31 degree night and two 39 degree nights. This Friday it will be in the 80s, so I will...
