Need help dealing with sick chicken: Local Oakland chicken friend?

They are 8 years old. But the feather loss is just around her neck. They're starting to grow back. I'd be surprised if the broody was attacking the other just because she's always been so completely at the bottom of the pecking order but maybe!

Need help dealing with sick chicken: Local Oakland chicken friend?

I will look tonight. I only have 2 chickens and it's the dominant one who is losing neck feathers. The one who is usually pecked on is currently broody and not leaving nest box. Coop is fairly large - used to have 3 chickens. I forget dimensions. They are also free to range around the back yard...

Need help dealing with sick chicken: Local Oakland chicken friend?

Hey all, I'm in Oakland, near Lake Merritt. I have a chicken who has pulled all her neck feathers so probably has mites or other parasite. I am overwhelmed by all of the information on the internet and would love it if a friend would come over and advise/encourage me. Frankly, although I only...

Mystery Chicken Illness - been to the vet twice - need help

Thank you for responding! Sorry for my delay - was having trouble accessing the site. She appears to be laying eggs now. Albeit long, skinny ones. Her poops are also normal. What would the treatment for peritonitis be?

Mystery Chicken Illness - been to the vet twice - need help

Hi all, I thought my chicken was egg bound. She was walking slowly, with a little bit of a waddle, and her feathers were fluffed. The vet agreed with this assessment (I'm a city dweller, not accustomed to molesting my chicken w/gloves and KY so I went to a pro) who gave her fluids and a...

    Re-assembling a Little Giant 11lb metal feeder?

We are going to contact the company for the little widgets. That does seem like the best option at this point. I am sure I don't remember ever having those things on it before, and I don't recall there being a tiny baggie when we bought it, but it's entirely likely.

    Re-assembling a Little Giant 11lb metal feeder?

Good idea! So far I can testify that office supply bulldog clips do not work at all.

    Re-assembling a Little Giant 11lb metal feeder?

Quote: Ken, that would help enormously! Thank you. Oh, I see, here's the clip, yeah, we didn't have that. Unless maybe they got knocked of and scratched into the dirt. Hmmm. http://www.miller-mfg.com/page/1/Product-Detail.jsp?groupId=620&prodId=63176

    Re-assembling a Little Giant 11lb metal feeder?

Thank you so much everyone! That is interesting news that the feeder should have had stoppers on it. We will try getting new ones, and/or try the suggested workarounds.

    Re-assembling a Little Giant 11lb metal feeder?

The thing came apart and I can't get it to hold together anymore. Any tips? I can't figure out what the trick is. There are two metal "wire locks" they call them, that criss-cross through the feeder tray and through the canister to hold it secure and hold the canister up an inch or above the...

    Cracked Eggs!

Amazing. This is just the info I needed. Same problem - scratching bedding out of the nest, laying on hardwood, cracked pointy ends. Only when an egg is laid outside, in the dirt, is it not cracked. Was thinking of putting dirt in the nest box. But maybe I'll try carpet.

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

Hey mama n peeps! My girls are about 19 weeks old. I'm sure the veterans can give you an answer about age range. I wasn't expecting them to start till 20 weeks. Need to go out and get some laying feed! These are black australorps, if that makes a difference, and one is quite a bit bigger than...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

Our first egg ever! Our three girls - black australorps - that we've raised from chicks. Am assuming it's from the largest one. She seems to be a little ahead of the other two. So exciting! This second photo is a few weeks old. Their combs are much redder and they've got quite respectable...

    Need help waterproofing barrel coop

Update: Found out the source of the problem. Wine barrels only stay watertight as long as they are full of liquid. So, anyone considering building a coop out of one, you've been warned. I imagine that if we had gotten this when it was brand-new five years ago and hosed it out every week, it...

my 8-week-olds won't sleep outside - help with transition?

Good news! It's been two nights and they've been doing fine. It turned out I didn't need a treat dish. The first night the three of them were pecking at my door like mad. I picked them up one at a time and marched them back up to their pen (our yard is a hill) and shut the gate. When I came...

my 8-week-olds won't sleep outside - help with transition?

That's completely spot on! In my imagination, the chickens are madly texting me. Chickens at gate: what what what? Where is she? OMG!!!!!!! what? Question: what is a treat disk?

my 8-week-olds won't sleep outside - help with transition?

So, my three 8-week-old Australorp girls are out all day in their house/run but they are so used to coming in at night to sleep in the laundry room -- now that the weather is warming up and they seem to be well-feathered, I don't know how to break the news that they have to sleep in the coop...
