Blue with white trim. The raspberries just past the end of the coop have been trimmed and I've fenced all 32 feet to the back fence and topped it with 1/2" hardware cloth for their run. This was, of course, AFTER I lost a couple to a hawk.
I have used shipped eggs from Ebay three times, all under a broody hen. The first time I got 4 chicks out of 7 eggs; 1 was infertile and 2 died as they tried to hatch. The second time I got 10 eggs but had them under an unproven hen. She quit sitting about half way through and sadly, I didn't...
I also have health issues with soy so set out to avoid feeding it to my chickens. I used Scratch and Peck whole grain feed at first then made my own for a short time using grains and supplements purchased through Azure Standard. But what I found is that the chickens were picking through the feed...
I have two Bielefelders and each lays a different shade of brown egg. I figured their genetics just lined up differently. They are both 9 months old. The calcium deposits...don't know but better than thin shells? Attached is a picture of my girls' eggs.
Yup. That's what I figured. I don't know much because I bought them as shipped eggs off of Ebay last July. Won't be breeding them anyway, just enjoying their chicken cuteness.
As it turns out all 4 really are girls! They all started to lay a few weeks ago and I get 4 blue eggs almost every day. I didn't expect it but they're awesome layers. My 4 pullets have put out 69 eggs from March 1-19.
:D
I once had a Wyandotte that finally began laying at 9 months!!
Of my current chickens the Bielefelders began at 21 & 22 weeks and the Crested Cream Legbars at about 25 weeks.
I also think they're really pretty. They are big too - bigger than my "normal" chickens. And boy can they eat! I let them free range every day so I'm sure that helps. They started laying in early December, which surprised me. I thought I'd have to wait until spring. They lay about 5 eggs a week...
Nope - Bielefelders. A farm store near where my friend lives had some last summer and because they were already 3 weeks old they were half price! I'd been wanting some, so what was I to do??? I used to have a Barnevelder but she is no longer with me.
:jumpy
I only have one Buff Orpington but she is the sweetest! She follows me a round like a puppy. I now have 4 Crested Cream Legbars (28 weeks old) and have totally fallen for them too; sweet, quiet and calm. Plus they lay the prettiest blue eggs. I also have 2 Bielefelders, 8 months old and they're...
My quietest: Buff Orpington
My Crested Cream Legbars have recently started to lay but so far are also very quiet.
So loud I had to rehome them: Dominique and Wyandottes. They yelled and screamed ALL DAY! Which, of course, really really annoyed the neighbor. Too bad because they were friendly and...
It depends on your chicken breeds. Their size can affect flying ability - heavier chickens can't get as much "lift". My fencing is 6' but my good fliers can easily go over that! My Buff Orpington isn't much of a flier and roosts on the lower roost about 3.5 feet off the ground and that's about...
Well, I can't resist adding my experience from a while back:
One morning I went to a big box home improvement store (Lowe’s) to get mortar mix for the cement board seams in my shower. After wandering around the store, mostly near the cement board display trying to find the mortar appropriate to...
I agree, most hens know what they're doing. In one of my hatches egg #3 kept getting left outside the nest and not under the hen. A couple of times it felt quite cool to me but I candled it and it looked fine so I just kept tucking it back under Mama. Well, wouldn't you know that egg hatched...
I started out naming them for color (Buttercup, my Buff Orpington) or let my grandkids name them (cotton tail because of the white fuzzy butt as a chick. LOL). But in a short few weeks they all usually get new names because of their personality traits. Nutmeg a Barnevelder became Nervous Nelly...
