I have kept the hen in different sleeping quarters for 3 nights and during the day either she is out of the run and the rest are in or vise versa. I put them all out to free range and the same Red Star instantly attacks the same bird. What do I do now? Thanks, Amy
I have 10 hens that are 19 weeks old. They have all gotten along beautifully until yesterday. One Red Star started attacking another Red Star. It was brutal. I separated the attacker and last night put them all in our new, large run that we just built. Again, the same hen attacked the same...
I have a 13 week old Buff Orpington that has developed one droopy top eyelid. There seems to be nothing else wrong that I can see. Is this a concern? Thanks, Amy
Thanks to all for responding. It is ok with me if it is not a "true" brahma. This is our first time having chickens and we are enjoying them all. My family especially likes the Lt. Brahma because she is so different from the rest. Her comb is redder than all my other chickens but so far 4...
I wish I would have made mine big enough so that I could store supplies in it. We just built a 6x7 for our 10 chicks and it sure is a lot smaller than I envisioned it would be. Not sure I can keep 10 chickens in there all winter. May have to sell a few. Good luck, Amy
We are now building our 6x7 coop. We live in Minnesota, plus on top of a bluff with plenty of wind. We were going to put in a roof vent and now we are having eves. My husband said he will put in eve vents on both sides, so maybe we don't need a roof vent. He said we could stuff insulation in...
I am planning to put the nest boxes 18" off the floor, so the roof of the nest box, or the poop deck will be at 30" or so. I will put the roost above that. I shouldn't be crawling on the floor. Thank you so much for all your replys. We will start building more this afternoon. It is a...
Would it be ok if the nest boxes were below my roost as long as there was a poop board above it? The poop board would extend out further than the nest box by about 4 inches. Appreciate your input. Amy
Well, I too am very new at this. We just received our first chicks 3 weeks ago. I chose 4 Red Stars, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 EE, 1 Light Brahma and 1 Australorp. I was looking for nice "pet friendly" birds as well as some good egg layers in a cold hardy environment. Our experience so far is...
Your right, the top does come down! Thanks for pointing that out. Issue solved. Thank you everyone.
We are (well especially me) looking forward to building the coop. This is our first experience with chickens and so far we have had a blast. It was so much fun picking out what breeds to...
We are building our coop this weekend. It will be 6x8 with 4' high side walls. The ends walls will be taller for they will peak in the center. Anyway, we have 2 double hung windows that are 3x3. One window will go on the side wall (4' high). Should we install it upside down so that the air...
We live in Minnesota. We had planned to put vinyl flooring in the coop but while we were at Menards they told us that it will just crack over the winter and we will be replacing it. There are so many here that use it but are all of you in warm climates? If you are from a cold climate and use...
