Hello! Have had chickens for the past 4 years. We decided to add some ducklings (uh.muh.gawd!!💖). We got 2 Cayuga (1m, 1f) -breeding pair. Wondering if we can add Welch Harlequins (1m,1f) next? If I do 2 mating pair, will they stick with their mates or try to interbreed?
So… update: We did end up losing one more of the super blues (breed created by hatchery) very randomly the next day and are now left with 5. She has been a GREAT mama! The chicks are doing well with her so far. Thank you everyone for all of your advice and support! 💖🐥🐤
No, no eggs. We tried that but it didn’t work. 3 real eggs and a small blue Easter egg (about the same size as our polish and Ko shamo eggs and she wouldn’t sit those and literally kicked out the Easter egg. 😳😂
I went ahead and added the last 2 chicks. Now all 6 of the chicks have come out and are nesting together without the hen. She isn’t doing anything to get them back under her. The coop is just under 80°.
She’s been broody for about 2 weeks or so. There are 10 girls and 2 roos. Here are some pics to help.
Also, I was up checking right around sunrise and all was quiet. The chicks have been actively peeping for food and water and coming out from under her. I set their food and water up so they can...
First, let me just say you’re amazing!!! And thank you so much! Next, we are in Bend. OR. The chicks arrived yesterday morning and they got to eat and drink all day yesterday and now they’ve gone 12 hrs without. I’ve checked on them every 30 minutes for the first couple of hours and now about...
I just went out there. Doesn’t look like anyone has moved (her or babies). All is calm so far. The last 2 didn’t get put in yet. Might wait til tonight.
Thanks for advice. Will go out back out again in a couple more hours (after I sleep some more 😂) to see what, if anything has changed).
Ok, so we’ve been raising chicks in a brooder for the past few years since we started this. For the first time, we’ve decided to try out giving the new chicks to a broody girl. We haven’t had her long so don’t know what sort of “mom” she is/isn’t and we’ve never had “natural born chicks” (one of...
Actually, it’s REALLY GOOD for chickens. It helps keep them from getting respiratory issues, intestinal parasites, keeps the mites and fleas from infesting -all SORTS of issues. ❤️ You can use a little fresh garlic in their food or in their water, or put a little garlic powder in their food...
I’m on the west coast and obviously would prefer to drive to get them vs having them shipped (pasty butt and stress). We live in Tumalo/Bend (central) Oregon, but have a house (the “Money Pit”) in North Lake Tahoe that I’m going to be at most of the time until March doing some small upgrades to...
So... it’s November and I wanted to get an order of Silkie chicks to have ready for breeding by late spring/early summer. I raised them this summer with ease. Here’s the catch though.. I wanted to know how long they can stay in the brooder for?
I’m going to be living in our Tahoe house, fixing...
Our favorite little Silkie got hurt. I bent over to pick her up and my phone fell on top of her, hitting her with the corner of the phone. She screamed. I scooped her up, held her closely and cooed at her for a few minutes, gently petting her. The spot she was hit on was warmer to the touch and...
Every other chicken I’ve had has been extremely easy. It’s like having Thing 1 & Thing 2 (and Thing 3) in my house. Not amused. Do love the little buggers though. She’s been sitting there with the other 2, watching the black birds come to the bird feeder and making that happy soft chirp sound...
Awesome cuz they are quite the PIAs right now -screaming when I put anything over their brooder to keep them in and jumping out and crapping all over when I don’t.
I think I’m going to put them outside today when the sun hits the pen and keep them out from this point on.
I didn’t have a way to increase distance between light and brooder, but I’m curious if you think I could let them live outside now? Day temp will be 70s-80s, but nights will get down to high 30’s...
Day time, should I keep them in or let them out. If I let them out, should I keep them in the...
So, I’m really new at this.. I have 3 new chicks (SLW’s), 4 weeks old. NOTHING like my Silkies were as babies.
They have been in the brooder inside, but have been a bit of a menace. They keep jumping out of the 40 Gallon Rubbermaid container I have them set up in (worked perfectly for my Silkies...
