This is Rocky, my BBR Phoenix cock, he’s about a year old and I’m sooo happy to have him in my flock. Entered him in his first show and he took home Best of Breed, Champion All Other Standard Breeds, Champion Large Fowl, and 3rd Best Overall so I’m very proud.
Are you getting bantams or LF? I don’t know much about bantams but if you plan on showing LF, Gold, Silver, & BBR are the only accepted varieties. The Fawn Silver DW and the Blue BR birds are gorgeous project birds though.
I have a pair of BBR Phoenixes I acquired from Toni Rivers, the secretary of the American Phoenix Breeders Association and the birds are a total ham. I just entered them into their first show and the cock earned BB, Ch. AOSB, Ch. LF, and 3rd Best Overall so I’m a happy camper.
Keep roosters away from hens in the months leading up to the show because hens may pluck feathers or he may damage his when mounting them. Stay away from wire-bottomed cages, roosters may damage and fray their wing tips. Bathe them 3-4 days before show to allow natural oils to replenish and wash...
I'm moving 500 miles away from home for undergrad but I'm entering my birds into the youth fair one final time and selling most of them right after. My parents were adamant about totally dispersing of my flock right after fair season/before I graduate but I have put too much time, effort, and...
I currently have him on gamebird feed and all my other birds are just starting their molts while he started and stopped progressing through his a couple months ago; I’m just going to hope for the best come fair season
Does anyone know what to do with a bird that seems to have stopped molting halfway into his molt? He’s a 4 year old Fawn Silver Duckwing but he has no duckwing at the moment but the bar’s been missing for at least 2 months.
Sorry, I meant BBR hens— I understand a cock exhibiting it on his breast & tail because that’s where all the black’s located but what about on a hen? BBR hens don’t really exhibit black.
I have two BBR Phoenixes & 6 eggs in the incubator right now. My Cockerel is about 10 months old and he’s a beaut but I’m worried about his breast/chest; it’s speckled with white feathers. Show-quality Phoenixes are hard to get a hold of here since there’s only one breeder—that I know of— and...
Thought I’d update y’all: the chicks are fully feathered & their feathers look a lot cleaner and better quality & THEY’RE BOTH COCKERELS SO I’M ECSTATIC
Thank you for the reference, I read over a handful of forums and think I have a decent understanding of the feather quality issues associated with the Lavender gene so I know that these chicks may have poor feather quality but I really want to try something new & interesting with my flock. The...
Once again, thank you— I’ve never had or even seen a chick of a cuckoo variety so I didn’t know what they would look like; all I knew is that I was seeing lines in his feathers and that wasn’t something I was seeing on the Lavender birds I saw online or at fairs. I’m almost certain it’s a male...
Thank you so much for the explanation about the barring; I didn’t know if it was the result of low feather quality in Lavs or actual barring that I was seeing— that’s why I’m glad I have a black to breed back to.
I don’t plan on dispersing of my flock anytime soon and I got these birds from this specific line to breed from in the first place. I’m asking a hypothetical question and I think it is reasonable of me to plan ahead and ask questions anytime before taking a risk or doing something that may set...
