Chicken hatcher going goose, what should I know??

Hello goose people! I love my chickens and know how to hatch their eggs with reasonable success. Now a neighbor wants me to try incubating some goose eggs for him. I understand that goose eggs are trickier, and require 28-30 days incubation. What else is different about hatching geese please...

Newbie butchering a 10 month old rooster, why did the butt turn green??

Help please! I’ve never done this before. The roo I dispatched today (more or less uneventfully except I cut my finger) was a 10 month old Marans/Easter Egger cross. I don’t need to be told he was “too old”, I understand it’s unusual to let them grow up. He got mean with the hens and that was...

Day 21, only 6 successful hatched so far, 2 dead suffocated when they pipped, thick veiny membrane, what’s going on?

Thread title says most of it. Both dead chicks seem to have gotten their beaks caught up in the very thick, gel-like membrane just after pipping and died. Neither fully absorbed the yolk. Any idea what causes this problem? Thanks, still praying for the remaining 35 unhatched chicks.🐣❤️✝️

Just hatched Bourbon Red turkey poults in Southern Chester County, PA

6 available so far, will update with the final count tomorrow. A few may be 1/2 Spanish Black, I’m not 100% sure, as the eggs were given to me by a friend. Asking $10 each, no shipping. Will consider a reasonable offer, I need to sell them quickly as I have no room for these adorable turkeys. I...

Is this “splayed leg”? Newly hatched bantam mix can’t stand

Hi all! Very strange leg positioning on this Silkie/Cochin cross. It did just hatch today, so I’m not sure if I should be worried or not. The chick seems unable to stand, it scooches forward dragging its butt with its feet still forward like that. I tried to get a hobble on, but I wasn’t sure...

What kind of worms are these? (Pics are yucky)

I did not notice the signs of worm infestation in my flock because we were also fighting a respiratory ailment (tentatively identified as mycoplasma). I have lost a few young Marans cockerels and pullets, for some reason my Marans seem especially susceptible. Found these in the gizzard of the...

4 month old Marans pullet very small, weak, lethargic. Never grew up! Why?

Hi all. I just lost an unrelated BC Marans cockerel a few days ago with the same condition. He and Ready (the pullet, an experimental Red Mottled Marans) are/were 20 weeks old, but are about the same size as my 7 week old backyard hybrids. They both seemed to reach a certain point and just...

6 week old pullet lost whole leg to predator

Hi all. My 6 week old Easter Egger/Cochin pullet, Sunflower, lost her leg to an unknown predator 2 days ago. (GRAPHIC PICS) There is no stump of bone left, it seems to have been ripped out whole up to the pelvis. She is remarkably alert and mobile, which is a true blessing from God, but I am...

First time hatcher concerned about this chick (weird growth on butt)

Please bear with me if this is a newbie question. This little Jersey Giant hatched about an hour ago. I understand that JGs make fairly small chicks normally, but I am a little concerned about this one anyway. It has some kind of meaty growth on its rear, well below its vent. I know the picture...

    Heat Question

Setting up my VERY FIRST incubation! :fl ✝️❤️Miller’s Little Giant #9300, still air with no egg turner, 46 egg capacity. The manual actually recommends setting temp at 103.5F to maintain optimum temp of 99.5F at egg level when not using turning bars. Can that really be right?! I’m terrified of...

Sudden death of 1 year old BC Marans. Why?

My 1 year old BC Marans, Pella, was lethargic today and stayed in the coop all day. I blamed it on the rain. I went to lock up the coop and found her lying on top of the brooder. She has since passed away. Her mouth was full of very gummy mucous, and she was dribbling cloudy fluid out of her...

Nanking bush cherry, yea or nay?

Just purchased 2 Nanking bush cherries. Knowing that cherries are a favorite treat for chickens, I intended to plant one in their yard and one outside the fence for me. But now I discover that Nankings are not actually cherries at all, but are more closely related to plums? Am I still safe...

Marans hen in trouble, something hanging out of her vent

This is Pella, a 1 year old Black Copper Marans hen/pullet. I saw her separating from the flock today, and her vent looks like this... She showed no signs of illness before this except 2x the small end of her eggs was soft. She hasn’t laid much all winter. Is that her oviduct hanging out? How...

    Anyone know what these are?

These eggs are all over my chickens. The Jersey Giants are the hardest hit. I know it’s hard to see with the flash on, they are white. No sign of anything crawling, just eggs. Treated with permethrin concentrate bath, thought they were gone, but I must have missed someone, because Hero is...

    Eggbound I think... please help!

My Cochin girl Sunshine has a problem. I found her in the recycling bin (her favorite temporary laying spot) bearing down trying to lay after everyone else was in bed. I just saw an article on egg binding but naturally I can’t find it now! I have her in a warm bath and flushed some canola oil up...

Best worm treatment/preventative for laying hens and roos?

Hi all, not sure if my flock has a worm problem, but would rather be proactive. I’ve noticed some weight loss in my rooster (though he’s by no means bony) and another rooster with a dry red vent, so I figure it’s time to start them on at least a preventative worm treatment schedule. What is the...

How can you tell if your flock has worms?

Beginner’s question, I know. Also, when giving Piperazine for worm treatment, how long are the eggs unsafe? The bottle actually prescribed constant treatment (every 30 days!!) and no use for laying hens. They are dreaming, or avoiding liability. Any help appreciated!

Can splay-leg be corrected in adults?

I’m sorry to say I was too inexperienced to notice my Marans rooster’s splayed legs when he was a chick (April 2019). He gets around just fine, but I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do to straighten his legs now. Any suggestions?

Rooster with dry red vent, no bugs

Hi folks, need help with my 1 1/2 year old Easter Egger roo please. Did a routine butt check today and discovered his vent is dry, red, and inflamed. No evidence of lice or any other parasites. Plenty of fluffy feathers except right at the vent, where he is clearly picking at them. His behavior...

Anyone else think hatching chickens is just too overcomplicated? (Psst...BTW, that's code for HELP!)

Ok, full disclosure time. I am both mentally and physically disabled and can NOT comb through all the volumes of information on this forum. Raising chickens is my therapy, and I can do it because it's SIMPLE! So if I ask questions that have been answered millions of times, please understand and...
