Another 1 dead in the coop this morning and 1 more looking like its on its way out. This whole thing blew up in my face. Most are not any where near a butcher weight.
I think they were on the larger size. I have butchering scheduled for May 17th. Unfortunately I can't move that up. I have them on 19% finisher. Here's to hoping not losing many more.
Just plain old cornish crosses. I'll go through the rest tomorrow and weigh them. See if can figure anything out. I did change all their bedding today. Dang they like to poop.
I started with 75 and lost 4-5 early on. Then I have really good until now. 6 weeks on Monday, 2 to go till butcher. I've lost 4 in last 3 days. No signs of distress, just roll over and die. I'm taking away food at night. Should I push up butchering? I'm losing my profit :(.
Its normal... don't panic. Make sure the bedding is always clean. As it gets full of poop it builds up the smell. But my cornish do it from time to time. Search around the board and this is super common for this breed.
I got mine from Hoovers in Iowa. Went a little overboard for a first go. If I average 5lbs, I'm looking at nearly 300lb of chicken meat! I've been trying to sell it but haven't had much luck.
At the end I'm guessing I'll have about $900 into them. Butchering I'm looking around $500, $250 in...
My birds are almost 5 weeks. I already have butchering scheduled for 8 weeks but I'm not sure if they are gaining enough weight. With only 3 weeks left, will they be the right size? I free feed them 22% starter now they are going on finisher 19%. Also I'll be moving them outside to a coop/run as...
I forgot to add this happened last year on a order also. One by one I lost over 30 chicks from them. For like 45 days I was getting reship from them, I finally told them to give me money back. Unfortunately being over a week now I can't get any refund on these ones and they weren't cheap.
Ordered 3 dark Brahams from Cackle. They were just over a week old. All died. No sign of destress or anything like that. All the other chicks from around the same time from other places are all fine. Brooder was good temp, they had food, water, etc. Just been finding one dead each morning. They...
Mine were hatched the 24th of march. But someone said that this breed just sneezes like that unless you see gasping for air or discharge they should be fine.
If it's still chilly how do I encourage them to actually get up and move about vs sitting under the lamps all day? I can make a run as big as needed but need to figure some way to encourage them to use it.
Thanks. My whole plan went bad. When I ordered everything, the long range forecasts had temps warming up into the 50-70+ range. Now the next 3 weeks are supposed to be really chilly, no way I can put them in an coop outside that isn't heated or insulated. The heat lamps can only do so much...
Honestly if 70 make it, I'm still in good shape. I'm hoping that I average 5-6 pound dressed weight and I'll make a little bit of money selling them. I will add a 8x8 outdoor run for them and switch to pine. That'll probably help. Thanks everyone for the advice.
In my garage. Temp has been cool, 30-60 depending on day/time. However with the 4ft walls of the brooder its keeping it above 50 inside there, 85 under the lights.
That was the plan in the start but every single store around me was sold out. The farm supply store had this healthy straw its called and said it would work. Now their bigger I'll see what I can find.
