To cull or not to cull?

Let me preference this by saying that I'm not allowed to keep roosters because of city ordinances, so keeping him for myself is not an option. Background information: Back in January or February I got 4 more chicks that I added to my existing flock of 5 hens - 1 Brahma pullet, 2 Orloffs that I...

Orloff and Brahma Sexing Part Two

I am not certain on their age, I am guessing the brahma is around 8-10 weeks old just based on the picture's I've seen of Brahmas that age. I know she is at least 1 maybe 2 weeks younger than the two Russian Orloffs. Let me know if you need better pictures, and these are all hatchery quality...

Laying in the same nesting box at the SAME time

:th:lau I guess chickens take their favorite nesting boxes very seriously. There were 3 other perfectly good UNUSED nesting boxes they could have chose from, but nope! They have to sit on top of each other. Now I know why I keep getting crushed eggs.. Has this ever happened to you?

Has anyone ever just "thrown them in" when integrating new birds into a flock?

Here me out. I have 5 grown hens, and four 5-7 week old chicks that are currently outside. I have PLENTY of space, the run is 18/24 feet. When I took the chickies outside I thought that before I put them in their cage in the run I should just plop them down with the other birds and observe...

6-7 wk old Russian Orloffs and 4-5 wk old Brahma! Gender help.

I understand that the brahma is a little young, I'll repost pics of her when she's older if need be. Russian Orloff #1 The light Brahma. She is started to get wattles but they are not in any way red. These darn birds are so dusty! They'll luckily be going out after the weekend...

I had my first chicken death. Questions about fence height

Man, it's always your favorite ones that go first, isn't it? I never thought I'd be so sad over a dumb bird. My rooster Clack (profile pic) managed to jump OUT of the run (which is 5 feet high and I know for a fact he didn't squeeze through a hole somewhere), and of course right at that moment...

Please tell me these chicks are Russian Orloffs..

I got these babies from the feed store, so, you can understand why I'm a bit skeptical. All of the other RO chick pics I've seen show them as being yellow with a hint of red, while mine are much more chipmunk like. That said, they are definitely bearded and have white at the tips of their wings.

Show me your pigeon lofts!!! I need ideas

Brand new to chickens and already thinking about pigeons, :idunnoand there seems to be no good pigeon keeping books! So show me your lofts, inside and out, and tell me about them. What it took to make, what worked, what didn't, what the loft's primary functions are, etc. Let's turn this into one...

Converting Chickens that Live in a Run to Free Range? And Vice Versa?

I'm not allowed to keep roosters in my city and my surprise cockerel is starting to find his voice and is likely gonna have to go soon. I have a friend that's allowed to keep roosters and is willing to take him, and he completely free ranges his flock and only provides chicken feed for them in...

None of my 5 month chickens have wattles or combs! Even the suspected roo

I have 6 5 month old chickens: 2 SLWs, 2 Buckeyes, a White Crested Black Polish and a BL Polish. The BL is showing all of the signs of a rooster (at least appearance-wise) except he doesn't have any wattles! He barley has two pale pink stumps (so does my WCB), if he's sick he's certainly not...

I'm back with the same chicken. Loss of appetite, mouth discharge. Frostbitten feet??

Can't believe I'm back here so soon. Same chicken, 15 weeks old now I believe. WCB Polish. I noticed something was wrong today when I came out at noon and she hadn't even left the coop. Her tail is droopy, and she's standing idle, her eyes are half closed (tho that could just be because of the...

13 wk old polish acting lethargic, fluffed up, droopy wings and eyes, everything in the book.

I'm a first time chicken owner and I've dreaded coming to this page especially so soon. Just now at 7:30 I let my chickens out and my WCB Polish has just turned around in behavior, she seems to have every sick sign in the book! Everything I mentioned in the title, plus she doesn't complain when...

I know they're a bit young, but the suspense is honestly killing me. I have 6 chickens - 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 2 Buckeyes, a White Crested Black Polish and a Buff Laced Polish. They're still inside because of the cold and I'm traveling soon. I ordered them from MyPetChicken and they're all...

Just how important is "exactly 95 degrees" for day old chicks? (Confusion with the ecoglow brooder)

I am a first time chicken owner, chicks ship on Sept 10th (for the fun of it: two Silver Laced Wyandottes, Two Buckeyes, a Buff Laced Polish and a White Crested Blue Polish). I have read lots of articles that tell me that day old chicks need exactly 95 degrees with -5 every week, or they will...
