Major issues with coop area& other flock related things

So, I basically live in the Florida swamp...it is ok most of the times, but a few times a year our land gets flooded. Right now my coop area is a small pond. I do my best most of the time to keep things dry for them (spread hay, clean out everything from the mud, give them raised areas for food...

    Weird small egg

so I got a really weird small egg in my nesting boxes. I know I’ve heard that chickens lay small eggs in the beginning, but my chickens have been laying awhile and this is the first I’ve seen like this It is also kind of bumpy

    So ducks don’t nest huh?

have been told that most ducks don’t nest- they just kinda lay wherever. Would’ve agreed until today. They have managed to make a hole in the dirt and gathered straw around it

    One white egg

I have 12 RIRs and the last few days when I collect eggs I get one “white” egg. I know eggs come in varying shades- I’ve had very dark brown to an almost purple color- but I’ve been wondering about this. They aren’t quite as white as store eggs ( I’ve heard they sometimes bleach them to make...

    Keeping poultry cool

i know there was a lot of discussion here about a month ago about how to keep chickens warm with temps up north having dropped really low. Now I’m asking about the other end since I live in Florida and it’s already warming up a lot. What are some ways to keep my chickens and ducks cool besides...

    Chickens are work

1st let me say- I love my chickens and I am enjoying them....like a lot. There is a new surge over the past years of people getting chickens. When I was a kid, the only ones you saw with chickens were farmers. Now, it is increasingly popular for people from the country, to the suburbs, to even...

    Monster egg! Poor chicken

I got a super big egg today! I’ve gotten one “ double yoker” before that was bigger than usual , but this one is just ridiculous! It won’t even fit in an egg carton! Poor hen that laid that one! Shown below it is with one of my average sized eggs for comparison- can’t wait to crack it and see!

    Chickens weird nesting habits

My 12 chickens have 4 nesting boxes and all decide to lay in the same box! I go throughout the day and find groups of eggs all in the same spot. I added more bedding the others and that didn’t change anything. I guess I don’t mind since I’m getting like 8 eggs a day, but it seems weird- I was...

Making ducks a place to lay?

My 15 ducks are too young to lay now, but I'm thinking ahead...Probably they will be ready sometime in April. I've heard ducks don't like/use nesting boxes....what do people do instead? I'm afraid if they just lay all over the ground, the eggs will get trampled as they run all over the coop...

    White eggs- Brown eggs?

I think my brown eggs from my hens taste better than store bought white eggs. I read that there is no nutritional difference between the 2. So the taste difference might be from them being fresh or mental from me working so hard with the chickens What do other people think/ prefer?

    Duck with stuck out wings

i have one duck that seems to have some of its feathers stuck out/ up - was wondering if this is a normal thing for birds just getting in all their feathers? Sorry the pictures are not great / blurry- the ducks are skittish and hard to get good photos of

More than 1 male duck in flock?

I have 15 ducks right now 5 different breeds - they are only a bit over 2 months old right now, but I've heard that male ducks will fight and sometimes kill each other. I have no idea what my male to female ratio is right now and was wondering what to look for or worry about . At what age does...

Chicken has made a hollow in the ground and laying in it and covering herself in dirt and not moving

My almost 22 week old Rhode Island Red Has made a little hole in the ground and is laying in it, rolling around and covering herself with dirt. She is pretty set on staying there, not moving when I reach for her or moving around the yard. I just started letting my hens out of the coop & run for...

    Sad day

one of my chickens was dead this morning- she’s been acting strange the last few days , but I thought she might be getting ready to lay. I’ve been letting them out of the coop for a few hours in the morning, when I can be around to check on them periodically. The last 3 days instead of running...

Adding a light to my coop?

My chickens are coming to maturity in the winter- OH NO! I've read that the diminished daylight can put them off laying. I also read (somewhere) that adding a light to your coop can "fool" them into laying in the winter months. Was wondering what people's experience is with this and how they did...

    Duck with a “weird” head

my ducks are 5 weeks old. Since I got a “duck package” I have 4 different duck varieties and can’t be totally sure what breed they are. I have one that has had a weird looking head since I got them. Seems healthy and happy and VERY social- we named him Aflac lol- just wondering if it’s a...

    Overcrowded?

I have a prefab chicken coop that is rated for 12-15 chickens, I know 15 refers to if you have smaller breed of chickens. I have Rhode Island Reds, (12) and 1 Americana( rescue) in the coop They just reached 18 weeks and I recently moved the coop and I’m worried they’re overcrowded, all of the...

    Egg laying start?

my chickens just reached 18 weeks, they are Rhode Island Reds, so they should be laying any day now. Anything to look for? I know some chickens that come to maturity during winter may delay laying - we live in Florida so not really cold weather here, although less sunlight and some cool nights...
