First time flock owner. I love my chickie doos (that's what I call them when I go out to their coop and say hello btw). I also love this site. There is so much information and support, which really comes in handy when none of your friends or family have chickens. They think it's neat and all but...
Maxine is named after my favorite singer Max Bemis.
My hubby named the leghorn Camilla after Gonzo's girlfriend.
Our silverlaced wynadotte is named Nicci Chixx (my bff is named Nicci, loves Motley Crue and insisted one be named after her).
My wheaton ameraucana is named Cara (a character from...
Yes!
My husband wanted chickens for years but I was slow to jump on board. I figured I'd like them (since I love all animals) but didn't realize I would be head-over-heels in love with them before the end of day one. I constantly find myself going out to the coop to play with them and never get...
... that no matter how many times your chickens try to eat your birthmarks, moles, freckles or tattoos without success they keep coming back to them over and over? My oldest chicks are 8 1/2 weeks and I love to let them eat out of my hand and still get a kick out of them trying to eat my random...
Just found this thread. Boy am I glad I didn't have to wait and wait like everyone else to see if Pippen would hatch or not since I have no patience. S/he's so cute and teeny! I really hope s/he makes it. I can't even imagine what s/he'll look like fully grown but I am uber-curious. Grow...
I am an addict as well. We started with 6 and less than two months later picked up 4 more. Unfortunately one didn't make it and one turned out to be a roo. If I could talk my husband into it I would go out and buy 10 more tomorrow. We totally have the space... I should bring that up at breakfast.
That was an informative article; thanks for passing along the info.
We use DE (diatomaceous earth) to prevent fleas and mites. It is amazing and totally safe for consumption, even by day old chicks. You can find it at your local feed store and it's cheap. All you have to do is sprinkle some in...
True Ameraucana or not she's a beautiful bird. I have a wheaton 'Ameraucana' chick that may turn out to be an EE but she's so young I can't tell for sure yet. I'll love her either way of course.
You don't want to introduce baby chicks to full grown chicks. If you wait to get your second set then keep them away from the older birds until they can fend for themselves and introduce with plenty of supervision.
As far as the handling goes-we handle our chicks every day no matter how much...
Those poor birds. Stories like this make me happy that my chicks stay in our old shed (we never used it so we converted it when we got our flock). We are currently building their outdoor run so I am glad I ran across this thread. Between the shed, the better material for the outdoor run and the...
A few days ago we had a major heat wave out of nowhere. I had slept in the first day and when I went out to open up the coop it was warmer than usual and all my chicks had their beaks open. Once the door was open and the fan was going it cooled down and they went back to normal and closed their...
I don't bring them out to the couch to cuddle all snug under a blanket (although that sounds very nice) because I have a husky. If you aren't familiar with the breed they aren't really good with small critters because they love to play and they play rough and I would hate for her to snap a neck...
Hello all! I am new to BYC and also a new chicken owner. My first set of chicks are a few days away from 2 months and my second set (they are addictive!) is almost 2 weeks. We have quite a variety even though we only have 9 birds. It will soon be 8 as one of my older chicks turned out to be a...
My little flock loves yogurt! We even used it as a treat post handling while we were taming them and it worked like a charm. They would get so excited they forget they were mad at us for picking them up. lol I have a feeling that I won't be feeding it to them by hand for much longer because...
I love all my chicks, even the one that turned into a roo. He's actually my favorite but I will be rehoming him soon.
This is Buffy. She's so laid back and very sweet.
And Camilla loves my camera. She's a total ham. She also loves to perch on my shoulder, which I love. So far no poo on my...
I have my first flock and chicken therapy is the best. When they are babies they are just too cute and fluffy. Once they are a little bigger they are fun to watch as they scratch and play together. Anytime I am stressed I head straight to the coop. Works every single time!
