Chickens falling dead off roost *dead chicken pics*

Howdy! I've recently encountered my first death from my flock, a 1 yr old easter egger fell off the roost at night, was laying face down on ground the next morning with purpleish comb. I chocked it up to heart disease and an inevitable death. That was about four or so weeks ago, and last night...

    Automatic watering chickens and ducks

I’m looking to see if anyone has had any success with an automatic watering system that works for both chickens and ducks. This is for the inside of my coop, where they only spend the night as they have a huge run for daytime. The ducks have a trough in the run for swimming. My concerns are...

Oops... I may have gotten some chicks!

Hey guys! I just wanted to share how "crazy" I am lol. I have a flock of 25, and I told myself that I could add 10 more chicks this Spring. Well.... we all know how that goes. I now have 18 chicks in my brooder. Good thing I built huge! My coop is 280 sq ft, with a 5k sq ft yard so space is not...

Texas heat shade idea!! (Pics included)

I wanted to share my shade idea for my chicken yard for the upcoming summer. I’ve recently attached my coop to a large yard via a tunnel. This was mostly done to keep the dogs out of nesting boxes, and the chickens from pooping on our porch. (win/win) The chickens were grateful for the loads of...

Texas Freeze- Open air coop design

Hello all! Texas weather has turned harsh the past few days, and my open air coop design is not built for this! I have done some improvements to try to prepare, however I am curious if y’all can see something that I am missing, and I may even need to do in addition to what has been done. The...

    Texas Duck Coop

Hello! I thought I would share my set up as it is working very well in the Texas heat. If you visit my page you can find my chicken coop which is the same concept on a much larger scale. I opted for a three sided coop to allow for air flow. I used an old dog kennel that I already had and...

**poop pics** moving worms, stationary yellow egg/balls on top

Hello! I was sitting out watching my chickens when I saw moving worms in one of their fresh poop, right in front of me. They were small, white, very thin, and I saw two of them. I then went to inspect other droppings which were not immediately fresh. I noticed small round yellow balls sitting on...

    Pullet Egglaying

Hello! I have 24 pullets that are reaching pol. Almost all of them have started squatting, developed a red face, and have been checking out the nesting boxes. I also have three that are already laying pretty normally for the past two weeks. My concern is that this morning I found three soft...

Any thoughts of breed on this little bantam? She’s about 4 months old and the buff coloring around her neck and chest is really throwing me off.

    Crested duck options

Hello! I purchased crested ducklings without knowing the consequences (won’t happen again) and ended up with 5 ducks and 1 drake. Is it okay to keep the drake as long as no harm or aggression is being shown? They are only 2 months old now. I will rehome if I have to I just wanted to get a few...

    Poop boards

Hello! I’m looking for some advice on how to incorporate poop boards under my roosting bars. My lowest bar is only about 2 ft off the floor, which my silkies use to be able to reach the higher bars. If I put the boards under the lowest roost, there wouldn’t be much space under. Any ideas?

    Nesting box find!

I found some very functional looking nesting boxes at Walmart today. They are “Your Zone toy stacking bins” for around $7! The dimensions are 16 1/4" x 15 1/2" x 11 5/8". I will see how they work in the future as I only have pullets right now! Does anybody else have any experience will these?

    Silkie chick ear laceration

I have a 6 week old silkie chick that has been pecked and made a laceration in her ear. This happened a few days ago, and I cleaned up the wound and she was put back with her flock mates the same age. Today she has scratched her ear and it is now bleeding again after almost a week of healing...

    Feather Eating

I have one 10 week old pullet that is picking feathers and eating them from the other pullets. I am wondering if this is a feed deficiency or if she is a bully? I have plenty of floor as well as vertical space in the coop so space should not be an issue. They are on Dumor 20% starter and grower...

I wanted to post my coop in case anyone else is looking for a hot weather coop design! The coop/open run is 280 sq ft, with an added mobile extension coming later on to give the chickens access to fresh grass and bugs. Here it goes! Hope y’all enjoyed!

6 week old chick- feather growth

Hello! I have a six week old bantam chick that is fairly far behind his brooder mates that are the same age. Is the slow feather growth a breed characteristic? How much longer will he need to be before he can go outside in the 60-70s at night? They have not had a heat lamp for about two weeks in...

    Sapphire Gem Sex-10 weeks

Hello! My sapphire gem is around 10 weeks old and is starting to look like a cockerel. I have read that this breed is supposed to have barred roosters, and “she” is solid, but I am sure this is not always the case. Any insight?
