Thanks for responding! Really hoping the chick makes it b/c I'm not sure how much energy it's been using working that shell. Guess I will have to just keep an eye out to make sure it stays softened.
While on vacation for a few days my broody hen sat on a few eggs and I decided to let her just go with it. This is my first go round with hatching and I didn't get an exact start date. This experience has NOT been textbook by any means. Earliest hatch date possible was last week. One egg had...
That was the point I made to myself early on when I dismissed cockerel idea and got both. I have a 2 month old phoenix cockerel that has a larger comb in proportion to his body than this one does. Im not experienced enough to know if my thougts on this were a logical comparison lol! Good to...
I was on a mission to get 2 brown egg layers around 2-3 months old to put in with the rest of my young flock—-request from my hubby. Been looking for a few weeks now and saw a post for Black Maran pullets-3 months old. I actually questioned one of pullets being a cockerel in my mind BUT got...
If Polish is a lady then the pending dilemma between my hubby and I will disappear lol! No need to fight over which roo to keep! Also, if I actually ended ip with mostly pullets in an assortment Im one lucky lady!!!
Interesting you mention Chantecler bc thats the one Ive had to babysit out the box. Developed much slower than rest with a few issues here and there. Id be thrilled if Polish is hen...but it’d be one mean lady bc it dominates the crew lol! I tried for head on but Polish wasnt habing it lmao!
Here they are! Any help appreciated. I can only guess one out of all these.
Lakenvelder
Chantecler
Black Sumatra
Partridge Cochin
Silver Spangled Spitzhauben
Buff Lace Polish (only one I can reasonably guess is Cockerel bc of its behavior with the other known cockerel)
Quick question before I decide to post pics...my chicks are a few days shy of 6 weeks. Is that too soon for gender as far as feathers go? I already have one that I posted for breed ID a couple weeks back that everyone noticed (but me ) was a cockerel. Was that just by chance that his feathers...
I ordered the Rare Breed Assortment from Cackle and I'm happy with the experience and chicks but slight red flag for me. Chicks arrived when they were supposed to and I was given 2 extras. All chicks survived although 1 needed a bit more care after it arrived. The one that needed care seemed...
I actually just did the brick thing last week and need it a tad higher but it's helping! Yes, I've been good about avoiding anything that would create moisture and fumes. MG was the only thing that popped up when I looked into symptoms. If for any reason the others do start showing symptoms...
Cackle Hatchery--I didn't see a reason to call about the injured beak because it looked like it had got pecked and all including my extras had survived. Luckily the others are all exceptionally healthy. The brooder is in my bathroom at the moment so it stays very clean with fresh shavings. I...
This is my first go round with Chickens. When I received the Chicks, they were all alive and healthy but one (Chantecler) did have what looked like an injured beak (hole on top) and had pasty butt. It took a bit longer to start eating (had to do mash on the first day). It also ended up have a...
It started out more pink and is now darker--so not sure if it would go back to pink. It was from Cackle Hatchery rare breed assortment. I was supposed to get 5 and the 2 extras they threw in survived. I'm thinking the 2 extras would've been rare breed also but never know. I checked their...
Thanks! This group is a wealth of knowledge. I hadn't even considered it possible to sex the first chick! Learning something new every step of the way!
Oh wow!
My very first impression when I got the chick was a Phoenix but the leg color wasn't adding up and group actually mentioned that. I would say the legs darkened up a tad but still can't say it's even a solid gray yet. Thanks for gender info---now begins the watching and waiting to see...
So I'm back to follow up with a post I made about 3 weeks back asking for opinions on the rare breed chicks I had gotten. There was one chick that everyone agreed could be a BB Red Aseel...but not 100% sure. We are officially at 4 weeks now so I'm thinking there have been some changes that...
