    Silkie or Silkie/Polish cross?

These chicks hatched June 9th. I know it's way too early to tell what the genders are, so I'm not thinking about that yet. I am curious about coloring/breed though. The pen these two came from have a splash silkie hen, black silkie hen, buff laced hen, mottled cochin. We also have silkie roos...

Silkie developing cataract in one eye

My 3 year old silkie, Inky, has developed a white cloudy area on her eye. It does not seem to bother her at all. I included a picture of her other eye for reference. Could this be a cataract? I posted on FB and someone said maybe she has ocular Mareks. I truly hope that's not the case. She isn't...

    Color/Gender help!

With this chick, I understand there is no way to know the gender at this point. I'm just curious what color this chick may turn out as? The mom is likely our buff-laced polish and the father is either a silkie or mottled cochin. It has feathered feet- I did not check to if there was an extra toe...

    Two new hatches (6/9/23)

My mom noticed that our girl Spinach had been broody for a while. She is a bigger breed of chicken (she's a barred rock and while she's not ginormous, she's not a bantam breed/polish) and we have promised ourselves we will never hatch bigger breed chickens again. So we took the eggs in her coop...

    Blu-kote for mites?

It has been a rough few months!! We've had more issues lately than in all of the time owning chickens. Our crossbeak EE has mites and DE has not been working. I went to TSC today and picked up 'Poultry Protector'. The lady suggested that I get 'Blu-Kote', which I did. I put it on her and I'm...

    Coccidiosis in my white maran

It has been a rough month or so for us when it comes to our chickens. We lost our frizzle, Goldilocks. Then our white maran, Sunshine, started acting very sick. Shortly after that, our RIR named Effie started acting sick. THEN our crossbeak was acting odd (breathing hard, crop didn't seem to be...

    Prolapsed vent in tiny silkie

Our tiniest chicken (a buff frizzle silkie named Goldilocks) has what appears to be a prolapsed vent. I tried to help her without pushing it back up in her body ( I just sort of held it against her backside and hoped she'd somehow guide it in naturally, that probably makes zero sense though)...

    Wry neck in silkie?

I have a silkie who has been inside for a while now. She needed some major TLC and time to regrow her feathers. Her feathers have come in really nicely (she had lost almost all of them). Over the course of her time inside, she went broody and now we have a chick. I wanted to move her outside a...

    Hen raising chicks with flock

Question: I currently have a momma sitting on an egg that should hatch soon. Previously, we have not allowed the hens/chicks to be with the flock after hatching. I've just been too much of a worrier to let that happen. Our issue with that, though, is reintegrating the chick/hen back into the...

Identifying this little baby mottle cochin mix!

Below are some pictures of our new little hatchling. We have a mix in my coop (splash silkie, smoke (i think?) silkie, frizzled buff/gold silkie, silkie with black/brown feather, silkie with predominantly black feathers with a sprinkling of brown in areas, mottled cochin, and black silkie). We...

    Confused about an incubator

A class at the school I work at is hatching eggs and below is the incubator they have (A2370 HOVA-BATOR). They set it all up, and I gave them eggs. However, I'm a little confused about the egg turner. It doesn't look like the turner in my incubator at home, or any of the ones I've seen. The...

    Mites help!

Hi! We have a sick chicken. At first he seemed to have an impacted crop. We cleared that up but he hasn't really improved. I went out to feed him some extra today and saw what is in the picture. Am I right in thinking these are mites?? He has lost weight and is very lethargic. Tomorrow I will be...

    Life expectancy for TSC silkie?

Hi, I'm just wondering what the lifespan of your tractor supply company silkies have been? I know they come from different hatcheries, so it's hard to pin down. Online it says 7-9 years. We got a pair of silkies (and two barred rocks) from TSC in 2019. One of them passed away previously due to...

    Removing problematic rooster

So I have a silkie rooster who has been bullying my silkie hen (ironically the one who raised him. not his "bio" mom but he hatched from and incubator and immediately went under her). She's a tiny girl and is the sweetest chicken ever. He was fine with her when she was raising him (even stayed...

This has saved the lives of two of our chickens!

Our silkie and our Easter Egger were both (at different time) on death’s doorstep but this medicine brought them back. It’s amazing. Mine is about to expire, but I’m thinking of buying a new bottle for emergencies.

    Little chick hatched!!

A little baby hatched this morning. Baby is half silkie/25% Black Andalusian+ 25% Olive Egger (or Partridge Penedesenca). The mom is a silkie!!

Silkie sounds congested and has wetness near eyes

I noticed today that my silkie sounds a bit congested at times and also appears to have some sort of liquid near her eyelids. I did give her some VetRX, but I was wondering if anyone might have an idea what this could possibly be? And a treatment for it?

    Silkie has gone broody again

We perhaps have made a mistake!! So my black silkie, Inky, is our best mama. She's raised countless chicks (she raised her first set of chicks at under a month old [ i think ] when we were in an emergency pinch and put day old chicks in with her and another silkie. she immediately sat on them...

Too early to tell gender on these silkies?

Is it too early to tell the gender on these babies? This picture has nothing to do with the gender, but I thought I would show it. I've never seen feathers that are half one color and half another. So interested to see what kind of babies would come from this coloring mixed with another.
