I'm looking to purchase 8 to 10 laying hens in the Kansas City area. I can acquire them in the middle of March (will be out of town before then.)
I want them to be laying or about to lay and will accept ages 4 months up to 15 months old.
I prefer the following breeds in the order of...
Jackson County Missouri's Extension Office in Blue Springs, MO is selling our classroom incubators. These have been in use for years and although simple are proven!
We are selling these for $45 each and a little less for the ones that need some repair.
If you live close to us, let us know...
Those are great suggestions. I am already starting to collect local business names for this. There doesn't seem to be a lot of foundations that focus on agriculture any longer. That is really rather sad...
Anyway, thanks for the advice!
Dave
I have just started working for the Extension office in my county and learned immediately we are in desperate need for new incubators!!!
Does anyone know a grant program that would provide grant funding for in school programs and/or a sponsor who might be willing to take a project like this...
I DO NOT agree with Dwag. 7 dust is one of the hardest thing on the animals, people and plants... I use DE and like it. I use it as a wormer and put it in the dust and let them dust themselves with it. You can't use it much though cause it'll dry them out.
No absolutely NOT! When a hen goes broody, she eats less, drinks less and has a great deal of stress put on her. THEN she hatches chicks and has to raise them... again more stress... Worming your chickens can create stress also especially if they are discarding a lot of worms...
You need...
I use the Weather Channel version for my incubator... Keeps perfect humidity and temps... I also like that the temp gauge goes into the incubator and I keep the receiver next to my chair so I can check on it all evening...
I got mine at Westlake.
Good news, I kept dad away for about 2 weeks then released him... he nibbled a bit but got over himself and is now a perfect dad. Yeah!
I'm guessing he was disturbed his courtships were coming to an end... can't say I blame him for that but now that he knows those days are behind him, he...
I can help a bit there. If your goslings are more than a day old the mom usually won't accept them. Also, I have better luck removing the eggs then putting the babies into the nest... The mom comes in and sees new borns and then OH, I have children... LOL
If they are setting and you try to...
Hi all,
I've been raising Pilgrim Geese for 3 years now and last year, I put two adopted 1 day old goslings under my goose and all went very well. Both mom and dad took them with NO problems.
This year, I hatched in my incubator 8 goslings. I put these babies in the pen and although...
My dad said make sure you only eat them after the first frost or they will be nasty! I only remember they taste like dark meat chicken... My granny used to fry them and then put cook that into a gravy. It was yummy but I'm afraid I've become citified in my old age. Not sure I could eat them...

I had an infestation of Mareks Disease and almost lost all my chicks but decided to try out echinacea before I culled them. I was successful thwarting the disease but they were carriers from that point on. It might be worth it if you can figure out what they have.
Here is some...

I think they need to be breed with egg laying in mind. I would guess they used to lay better than the ones we have today. I couldn't imagine the old time farmers having much patience with chickens that don't lay. I gave mine to a local school who is working on the breed but my girls...
In a perfect world, we could divide a breed amongst a series of breeders. One breeder would focus on egg laying, one on body shape, one on visual aspects and one to put them all together. Actually in a perfect world we would have several breeders doing the same thing and then them combining...

I have seriously been thinking along the same lines. I live on a 1.5 acre lot in the MIDDLE of the city so probably can't shoot them but trap and kill would work... Wondering if they will be sweeter since they ate ALL my fruit!!!!!!!
Ok, I am now 5 years into my orchard and after waiting that long to get a good crop, I was excited to say I was gonna get lucky this year. Well, right smack at the point when my fruit is about to be ripe, the squirrels rob me blind!
They have eaten all my peaches, apples, pears and...

I had to laugh... it is 108 degrees here today in the middle of the US. I saw frozen and was taken aback a few minutes until I saw you were from "down under." I'm thinking it would be a good time to come for a visit!
