So,
My wife's uncle gave us 10 females, 7 young RSLs (16 weeks) and 3 Ameraucanas (24+ months). We popped them into an established flock of 12 RSLs, 1 BO, and 1 RSL Rooster...at dusk.
The older Ameraucanas came out guns blazing! The Rooster ignored the young RSLs, broke up 1 Ameraucana...
Let's see 'em!
You put alot of hard work into raising, slaughtering, butchering and preparing your chicken dinners. Show 'em off!
Fried chicken
Fried livers, gizzards and hearts
Baked chicken
Chicken "pot" pies
So it was time to do the early prep for Sunday's dinner.
We caught a rooster and hung him from a slip knot in preparation for slaughter.
He started drooling onto the ground. Not really a whole lot, but enough for us to take pause, maybe a tablespoon or 2 worth of it.
Any idea what caused...
I have 1 that is a gift from a neighbor. He is calm, gentle and good with children. He calls the rest of his flock over when food is presented (offering it to them and often eating last), among many other admirable/good shepherding behaviors.
I am almost done with my 2nd coop and am looking...
1. If you cut a main vein/artery, make your cut sure and deep. *If you flinch or hesitate, it makes it stressful for the bird and you end up lopping its head off to end the suffering.
2. 140-150 degrees for the scalding pot, don't leave this temperature window, 30 second swish/agitation...
Coop:
Space for 16-18 birds, occupied by 9 hens (1 of them broody on 22 eggs) and 1 rooster
Mesh pen:
Space for 30 birds or so, occupied by 10, 14 week olds
Incubator:
16 eggs set for lockdown the same day that the brooded eggs should hatch
Plastic tub:
Space for...not too many, occupied...
So I go outside about noon today to give table scraps and check on the water supply. I toss in the scraps and do a head count. All accounted for, but I then notice that 1 of my New Hampshires is acting funny. She ignores the treats, puffs out her feathers, squawks and runs off.
Curious, I...
My wife calls me at work this morning and tells me that when she went out to collect eggs, she found one of the hens dead in the nesting box.
She removed it from the box and went to dispose of it. She gently squeezed it and a yellowish pus-like substance oozed out of its...female orifice...
So last night, we notice a missing hen as we locked the birds up for the night.
"1,2,3...9...where's 10?!"
Checked the coop, nothing. The back 40...nothing. Locked up the 9 remaining hens while sorrowful for our missing dear, who must have been scooped up as a tasty meal by some predator...
No pun intended, of course.
A neighbor of mine, I live in the middle of nowhere, gave me 11 chickens. 1 rooster (cockerel?) and 10 hens (pullets?)
So, this is what I did (my 6 and 7 year olds helped tremendously):
Along with purchasing these guys:
I enclosed them in the coop for 24...
