Australorp SOP without buying the book?

Thank you! Should I post in there? I tried looking through that lengthy thread and I didn't see the actual APA SOP in there.

Australorp SOP without buying the book?

My son is doing a 4H project and needs the SOP for Australorps. Does anyone know where I can locate this online? Or does anyone have a book that they wouldn't mind snapping some pictures of those pages for me? I have no need for the full APA SOP book and his 4H leader is not getting back to me...

Bantam polish pullet attacked by flockmates [pictures in post]

Thank you! I brought her inside so flies will stay away. Hopefully the house-chicken status will be short and she'll be healed up fast!

Giving day-olds to broodies to raise?

Sorry, just getting back to this. They pecked them HARD. I didn't really wait much beyond a clearly aggressive peck because I didn't want hurt chicks.

Bantam polish pullet attacked by flockmates [pictures in post]

My poor polish was apparently too much for her flockmates today and they went at her. Pretty sure it was one peck that bled followed by a free-for-all before I got out there this morning. She has a tendency to annoy the other chickens (as polish sometimes do...) but they've been together for a...

    Breed help, please!

So is the muffing from a cross somewhere along the line? Will my adult have poofy cheeks? I don't care either way, these are backyard birds, not show flock, I just find chicken genetics interesting. :)

    Breed help, please!

Thank you! I placed the order specifically for the light brahmas and I've always wanted a blue laced red wyandotte so I'm pretty excited with my freebies! If they're both girls, I'm going to have to go buy a lottery ticket or something. I'm excited about our legbar too- she is SO CUTE!

    Breed help, please!

Thank you! Now we'll wait and see if the spares are cockerels or pullets.

    Breed help, please!

I just got an order from a hatchery. I ordered 8 pullets, they sent me 10 chicks (two surprises!). I can identify a few of them of them, but I need help with most of them. Chicks I ordered that have not been identified: 1 crested cream legbar, 2 light brahmas, 1 australorp, and then (bonus!)...

Giving day-olds to broodies to raise?

I made a valiant attempt, but was unsuccessful. I separated them, they didn't see the chicks at all until the chicks came out from under them but each chick was rejected. Which is fine, it was a fun experiment and the chicks are happy in the brooder in my garage. Now to get those broodies off...

Giving day-olds to broodies to raise?

Thanks for the tips! They are DEFINITELY broody and will have been broody about 19-20 days by the time the chicks arrive (so nice of them to go broody one day apart). Should I separate the broodies from each other? Would you keep the babies inside for a day or two to make sure they're all...

Giving day-olds to broodies to raise?

I have a Speckled Sussex and an olive egger (Maran/Crested Legbar, if it matters) that have been broody for 2 and a half weeks. Neither have been mothers before. Coincidentally, in a couple of days, I'm getting a shipment of 9 chicks in the mail that I ordered months ago. Can I slip them under...

    Bears

Not sure if this should go here or in the coop design section... Anyway, where I live, we have bears. Lots of bears. And they're hungry. My coop/run is right up against my deck and thus far we have not had a bear visitor (I think my large dog helps deter them), but my neighbors have had the...

1 year old chicken puffing up neck feathers

Thank you so much aart! I should probably break her unless you think I could get her to take some day-olds (she's a first-time broody, though). I have a couple (sexed) day-olds coming this week from a friend and I could separate her for that, but don't want to hatch out eggs. I can't have boys...

1 year old chicken puffing up neck feathers

She's full broody today! I've never had anyone go broody before. Totally puffed up, sitting in everyone's favorite nesting box, growling, looking like a total grump. Now I need to figure out what to do with her... that'll be a separate post. Thanks!

1 year old chicken puffing up neck feathers

My 1 year old olive egger is walking around like a grouch. She's still laying, eating, drinking, acting like a normal chicken, coloring looks good, hanging out with the flock, but if one of the other chickens looks at her straight on or gets too close, she puffs up her neck feathers and makes a...

Chicken sporadically laying in nesting box

I have a pneumatic stapler I can use. Paper staples would make me nervous too. The top of the nesting boxes opens, so I can't jam it in there quite like that, but I can try to kind of make it long front to back and jam it in that way.

Chicken sporadically laying in nesting box

The OE is at the bottom of the pecking order, the SS is 2nd from top. It's possible that the color of the eggs (and size... they're big!) bothers her. Chickens are funny like that. I will try to extend the nest box dividers. Do you think I could try cardboard during my experiment or do I run...

Chicken sporadically laying in nesting box

Ok. Here is my little coop with one uncooperative Speckled Sussex. She laid her egg in my "coop extension" today. Yesterday it was under the coop next to the straw bale (picture 5). Other times it's just in the middle of the coop. I took pictures before I cleaned today so excuse the poop. Each...
