Aggrevated at Farmers Market customers complaining about prices

Quote: edensgate - I don't think that at all. I don't have a money tree in my backyard either! I am very frugal with my food budget. (Well, all of my budget, lol.) I have a garden, I get most of my veggies from an organic CSA subscription, and I just started raising my own hens for eggs...

Help - my favorelle is losing her comb!!

Yesterday one of my favorelle pullets had black spots on her comb. They kind of looked like dried blood, and they are definitely not pox. She didn't seem upset, and the other pullets weren't bothering her. I picked her up to look at it, and it looked like it had been torn a bit. My cockrel...

    attack rooster! help!

cherwill, I'm sorry for your loss! I'm doing my best attempt at bravado, but I am dreading having to get rid of my roo. (I've stopped calling him by his name to make things easier on myself).

Aggrevated at Farmers Market customers complaining about prices

The VB Farmers Market has the same problem - hard to tell what's really local, and what's not. I think that if people want Wal-Mart prices they should go to Wal-Mart. The prices are so cheap because they mistreat the animals, the workers, and the land from the farm to the cooler case. They...

    How to "Do the Deed"?

No, not that deed! lol I mean, dispatching. The roo's going into the pot, and I have no idea how to go about this. (Nor am I sure I really want to, but that's beside the point.) Any advice for a first time chicken culler?

Aggrevated at Farmers Market customers complaining about prices

Quote: I know exactly what you mean! It's getting harder and harder to buy local anymore! I went by my local "farmers market" a couple of days ago, and there was a truck from a produce company out back unloading boxes!! It's the same stuff that's in the grocery store. I buy my broilers...

    attack rooster! help!

I have been having trouble with my roo the last couple of days. I was planning on giving him away because he'd gotten really vocal and we only have 6 hens. The kids were opposed to eating him. But now I can't do that in good conscience because he's gotten mean! So... I thought I would try...

Will Free Range Hens Lay in the Coop?

I have hens that are 18 weeks old, so I'm hoping they'll start laying soon. I'm wondering if they'll lay in the coop, or if they might lay somewhere else? They free range all day - in the yard, under the deck, in the compost pile, in the bushes, under the wisteria, around the pool, etc. I'm...

    money's tight... out of feed

I imagine it depends on how many chickens you have, how much land they have to free range on, and how much forage is available to them. If they're hungry they'll venture out and start looking. Mine barely eat any feed right now. They're outside from around 7 a.m until dusk, and they have...

Has anyone heard of black yokes before??

Black rot in eggs is caused by the proteus bacteria. It's found in soil and fecal matter. Her hens have probably coming into contact with raw manure from an infected animal (possibly the ducks). She should make sure that their coop area is thoroughly clean and that their feed and water aren't...

Flies no more!! Found the perfect fly repellent.

Neem Oil is an excellent repellant, and all natural.

    controling Fly's?

We do pretty much the same as above. I use Sweet PDZ in my coop http://www.sweetpdz.com/other-uses.html I also have a fly trap hanging outside the coop and it seems to keep them from wanting to go inside. Also, make sure your coop has lots of venilation.

chickens won't go in coop at night

There's something they don't like about the coop. Have you changed anything? New bedding material, new nesting box, etc? Or... like another poster said, it's too hot in there for them. Put a thermometer in and see what the temps are when it's time for them to go in at night. Hardware cloth...

What to do with a rooster?

No one the petting zoo. They all only have hens because they're afraid a roo could attack people. I tend to agree, lol!

    Introducing roo to existing flock

A good article on this from the site: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=2593-adding-to-your-flock It talks about Roo's towards the bottom.

    rooster picking on a hen

Part of the problem may be that you have too few hens for your rooster. I've read that you should have 8-10 hens for each rooster, otherwise they're overly active and can injure the hens. Once your hen is injured the others will peck at her relentlessly. You should never, ever introduce a...

    How can I catch her!

I use the "trail of treats" method when I can't herd one of mine into their pen. Most of them are docile enough to let me pick them up if I hand feed them some treats, but there are a couple of skittish ones that will run. So I use peanuts or cracked corn and make a trail to the run. They...
