Hen with long term diarrhea now has head shaking? Help!

I was able to get her to eat strawberries yesterday, but she will not even look at her normal feed. She's drinking, occasionally making some quiet noises and she seems to like being held and coddled. I'm at a loss at what to do, she's been in the kitchen crate for a week with brief breaks...

Hen with long term diarrhea now has head shaking? Help!

Hey there, I started a thread a couple weeks ago about my sick Araucana hen. She has had diarrhea for a couple weeks, has stopped laying, is lethargic and not eating much at all. After worming, antibiotics, yougart and various other supplements, I took her to the vet on Tuesday. The vet...

Can't figure out what's wrong with my Araucana, Advice?

She is roosting, and eating a little. She doesn't seem as interested in scraps and treats though.

Can't figure out what's wrong with my Araucana, Advice?

Oops, I guess I wasn't very clear on the poop. The feathers around her butt are full of poop, and they are usually pretty clean. So I can assume that she has some diahrea?

Can't figure out what's wrong with my Araucana, Advice?

Hi there, Last fall I was in the mood to add a couple chickens to my small flock and found two Araucana hens from a woman who was getting rid of her flock. They were quarantined for 5 weeks and have been a great addition to the flock. Just three days ago, my meek little Peaches started acting...

I need a temporary winter roof for my run . . . .suggestions?

It's adhered to the garage and there are concrete blocks on the front two corners . . so not a ton of support. When we put up the run we weren't really thinking about a roof, just netting. That's why I'm worried about the weight of the snow!

I need a temporary winter roof for my run . . . .suggestions?

Here's the picture of our run. I'm just worried about a tarp because the run is about 8 feet by 12 feet. That seems like a big flat area to collect heavy snow?

I need a temporary winter roof for my run . . . .suggestions?

Well, last year my silly hens would not take one step out of their coop into the run. I suppose cold was part of the problem, but I know it was mostly the snow that bothered them. Now that I have five birds instead of three, I know they will need that extra space in the run. So we "planned"...

    Is my Quarantine a bust?

Hi there, I have three backyard hens who we got from Mypetchicken that are about 18 months old. We recently got two other Ameracana hens from a friend in town who was moving, they have been in quarantine in a different coop for the last two weeks. Here's the problem, my sneaky brat hens...

Will I infect my tiny flock?

Well, that's kind of what I figured . . .it's a bad idea. I'm bummed! I guess I don't understand the vaccine if it doesn't prevent them from getting Marek's if they come in contact. So basically, if I want more chickens, I should order chicks from a quality hatchery, have them vaccinated and...

Will I infect my tiny flock?

Hello chicken lovers! I have a small backyard flock of three hens, 18 months old, that I ordered from My Pet Chicken. We got them vaccinated for Marek's, and they have been quite healthy, although they are molting right now. I have wanted to add a couple hens because I enjoy them so much and...

    nest box

My chickens have a plastic milk crate as their nesting box and it works just fine. I can take it out and hose it off when needed, which is handy. I make sure there is lots of nice bedding in it, and it's in the quiet corner of the coop . . .it was supposed to be temporary, but we got lazy and...

What is YOUR favorite breed of chicken and why?

I just love my buff Orphington. She's so puffy and sweet. She lets my kids carry her around the yard, loves to take a bath and get blow dryed afterwards . . .and I can see her all the way across the yard because she's so bright orange!

Sick Factory meat bird ended up in our vegetarian home - help!

Billina just had her first bath! She was surprisingly calm through the whole thing. Afterwards I was blow drying her so she wouldn't get cold and she did the cutest thing . . . she crawled up in my lap and laid down. My daughters helped, it was a nice experience for all. It's amazing how...

    Are green egg layers friendly?

I've been interested in possibly getting a couple chicks who would eventually greenish eggs . . .Easter Eggers or Ameracunas? Is that right? Anyway, I have been told that both breeds aren't very social with people, and don't make the best pets for kids. Is this true?? Thank you!

Sick Factory meat bird ended up in our vegetarian home - help!

Well, today I have someone from a local farm sanctuary coming to the house to meet Billina! Yeah! Hopefully we can get her on some antibiotics and eventually she can move out there for a happy little chicken life. I tried to upload a picture of her, not sure if it worked though!

Sick Factory meat bird ended up in our vegetarian home - help!

Wow, thanks for the link to the Farm Sanctuary! What a fantastic place, I wish it were closer! Is there a specific page on the website about caring for broilers? I didn't find a whole lot about the meat birds, lots about layers though. I would love to get more info like that . . . exactly...

Sick Factory meat bird ended up in our vegetarian home - help!

Ugh, the whole situation is so grim I can't stand it! I was hoping she would be able to be mingle with our chickens someday, but I see now that would be a really bad decision. I am going to take it day by day I guess. The first thing I can do for her is give her a bath and clean her up, but...

Sick Factory meat bird ended up in our vegetarian home - help!

Oh boy, I am in over my head! I am relatively new to chickens, I have three hens from mypetchicken who are close to a year old now. They are thriving and we adore them for their eggs and company. It's a long story, but I have acquired a very sick, factory meat bird ( we think ) who apparently...

Huge Crop everyday! Is she just a piglet?

Hi there, I am pretty new to chickens, that's for sure. We have three 9 month old backyard chickens right outside of Madison, WI. It's going pretty well, no major problems yet. But I did freak out a couple weeks ago when my barred plymoth rock had a huge lump on her chest that felt like an...
