This would have been a mistake....

Much applause. It just isn't worth it to work yourself to death. My family and I made a similar move two years ago when we moved from Atlanta to Austin (Pflugerville). I work way fewer hours, spend way less time in traffic, make less money, but spend way more time with the family (and now...

    Watering set up constantly breaking

I used a horizontal PVC arrangement. I think that maybe the vertical orientation of your tank is increasing the water pressure the nipples are experiencing, leading to leaks. I have both the horizontal nipples (6) and the watering cups with the yellow paddles (2). The lowermost cup gets the...

No spill feeder - did your chicks understand it?

Our chickens learned to use it almost immediately. I just reached into an elbow, pulled some feed out and tossed it in front of them while they were watching me. They seemed to understand. I ended up using an old Rubbermaid tote/bin that was sitting empty in the garage. The plastic is much...

    What breed is this pullet?

Thanks, y'all! Cubalaya wasn't even on my radar. After looking at pictures online, I think that is a pretty solid ID. One of the breed characteristics is that they grow and mature slowly, which would help explain why she is so little compared to the other chickens.

    What breed is this pullet?

Good morning, all. We have 6 birds and I am pretty confident on breed identification of 5 of those. The sixth eludes me... She is 10-12 weeks old (bought April 14 @ TSC, supposedly a 1 week old Delaware chick). She is much smaller than all the other birds. Third picture for size reference...

    Howdy from Texas!

Agreed. We should have probably walked away...but I knew the prices were high before we went out there. She seemed very knowledgeable and invited future questions, which made the high prices seem more reasonable. Kinda like IT support for chicken newbs... And I have also heard that no matter...

Chickens are in the coop finally! Here they are:

    First coop build

The coop is done! Well, "done". The chickens are moved in. We still need to paint and do some trim, but it is fully functional at this point. Here is a walk around. I apologize for the abrupt ending. Apparently my phone will only video for 10 minutes at a time. And never mind my...

    Howdy from Texas!

Thanks for the tip. I may just do that, though I have to admit it is much easier to chip away at a build thread one post at a time that to compile a whole writeup. I may get a wild hair...who knows? Here is a picture of our "girls" from a couple weeks ago, wishing I would hurry up and finish...

    First coop build

The "girls" waiting patiently for me to get this thing built!

    First coop build

The cutting was the "easiest" part for me, though nothing about hardware cloth is really easy. Getting the smaller sections to lay flat wasn't bad, but getting the longer sections on the run portion where they go floor to ceiling to lay flat/straight was nigh impossible. We are talking about...

    First coop build

Thank you! This is the biggest structure I have ever built, so I am pretty excited about how it is coming together, despite a few design oversights and that blasted PITA hardware cloth.

    First coop build

We have decided on the deep litter method, so there is a 12" wall around the bottom of the coop. The back wall hinges down, a la Carolina Coops, for clean out. Front door is a dutch door so the kids can throw them treats without getting mobbed. Right now, the sides are just 1/2" hardware...

    First coop build

Hey, y'all. We just got into chickens and I am building our first coop using ideas from all over the internet. The basic rundown is it is an 8'x8' structure with a 4'x8' raised coop. The entire run is secured and it gets into the 100's here during the summer quite often (with mild winters)...

    Howdy from Texas!

Thanks for the kind welcome, y'all. I can't wait to get the coop buttoned up and get these birds in there. They are so ready to get out of the brooder box. I was able to get one of the rear cleanout doors hung last night, with the help of my awesome wife. The other is going up tonight. At...

    Howdy from Texas!

Good afternoon! My name is Frank. My wife, Harmony, and our 4 kids (3, 7, 10, 11) recently took the plunge into backyard chickens! I have been lurking here for a few months, learning what I can about this new adventure. We got two pullet chicks, a Delaware and a Red sex link (for a grand...
