Who else is waiting the impossible wait?

The wait is over for us! Our 25 week RIR gave us our first egg Sunday. Not to be outdone, one of our 19 week Leghorns started laying Tuesday! They've graduated from laying in a corner on the coop floor to using the nest boxes over night. The RIR takes off each morning to forage and then...

    Augmenting Daylight with LED

It's time to determine how to extend the lighting conditions for our chickens. We'll not get into the debate about whether or not we should. We are. Gail Damerow suggests that if you must use fluorescent fixtures that you use warm-wavelength lights (orange - reddish light) as opposed to...

Cheapest way to feed free range laying hens?

Is there a grain elevator within reasonable driving distance? We found a farmer about 13 miles from us who mills his own feed and sells (word of mouth) 100 pounds of layer ration for $16. You have to return your empty bag when you pick up your next. I'm amazed at how much your birds eat while...

We just butchered our first one

We processed our first group of birds about a month ago. We did not brine or soak ours and they have been delicious and juicy! I used 2 gallon zip-loc bags and placed them in the sealed bags and on baking sheets in the fridge. They went into the freezer after two days.

Our 10 week old EE has been crowing for about 4 weeks. He's pretty regular at 6:15-6:30 am. Which is when we used to turn on the brooder lights each day. They're outside full-time now and he still gives the wake-up call and only sporadically throughout the day. We live in the country on...

    chicken, it's what's for dinner

We processed our first group of meaties a week ago. And I agree - yummy! I used melted butter with some lemon juice and rosemary and thyme as well. Can't wait to raise the next flock. Congrats on a delicious looking dinner!

Silly question from a newbie....how fast do meaties move?

We are newbies as well! Our meaties live in a brooder in our basement. They are 4 weeks old. As weather permits we like to turn them outside to a temporary pen. We only have 9 birds and there are 5 of us. One of us man's the gate to the pen and the rest of us carry them out. It takes a few...
