chicken died last night, can I eat her now?

Thank you! I just got back inside and everyone’s alive! We have four young hens that haven’t been introduced to the flock yet and they are in a tractor. I was a bit nervous that they were too exposed. Phew. Looks like that’s the coldest we’ll be for a while so hopefully by next cold spell...

chicken died last night, can I eat her now?

What about if it freezes to death over night? I know that’s not the op question, but a very real possibility this morning.

Please share your tips and tricks! Any homesteaders out there? Anyone trying to live sustainably or off the land?

Yes milking twice a day would be way too much for us as well. Dexters are small and usually produce only a few gallons a day. With calf sharing I could potentially skip a day here and there. I have heard wonderful things about goat and sheep milk-it’s certainly worth a go at it!

“No, your backyard doesn't have to look like a junkyard. :) )“ No, but I totally get it now! I pretty much keep every little piece of anything! 😂

I too have homestead dreams. Three and a half years ago we moved to a small acreage. We have six layer hens and a rooster. For now, we take the eggs. Soon I will allow one of the hens to sit a nest full, and we’ll see how that goes! The rooster does a great job protecting the hens. We have tons...

Official BYC Poll: How Do You Keep Your Coop Smelling Fresh?

My mobile coop has a 1 inch hardware cloth floor. I keep a small whisk broom hanging on the coop and sweep any droppings that don’t fall through on their own.

    Oregon

Hello, neighbors! I am just outside of Gaston on Chehalem mountain. Also a first year chicken-er. Since my coop is mobile and fairly open, I’m thinking of just wheeling it into a run in stall on the back of the barn, just to keep the wind off them. No heat or lamps or anything like that. I’m...

    Eggs at 4 months?!

That’s awesome! Congratulations! I’m pretty excited! I wasn’t expecting anything until October! I will probably be checking on them all the time now!

    Eggs at 4 months?!

Got my first one today as well! Just now, actually. I saw a chicken out of the pen and went to put her back in and noticed not all of them were in there. I looked in the nest box and there was one of my cuckoo marans. I waited a few minutes and when she came out there it was!! I brought...

    Chicks are coming!!!!

That looks great! Where did you get the door? Chickshaw and chickens are fine! They all seem to be very chickenish! (I did break the kick stand, not unexpectedly-we are on a good slope)

    Feeding scraps to chickens

As a new chicken owner, I was hoping this was true. One day when the chicks were pretty young, I threw some weeds into their pen. Then decided I probably should know what they were eating. The first thing they all ran for was the sweet pea. Then I read it was terribly bad and could kill them...

Using bird netting to create a "chicken yard"

Hi, we just started with chickens in May. So not a lot of experience talking here but, we have an electric fence around the mobile coop and I have bird netting over top to protect them from hawks and eagles and owls-here’s hoping it works!! I hope you figure something out and other more...

4th of July and panicked birds? Dangerous?

Mine are staying out on their “usual” routine. They are 7-9 weeks old. They have been mowed around, weed whacked and had the tractor in close proximity. I have also pounded t-posts in all around them, twice(which is very loud!) and we had thunder yesterday and the day before. Hopefully they’ll...

    Beginner question

Thank you! Good to know that it’s all okay to vary! Particularly concerning predators. We do have lots of coyotes here. I hear them quite close at night, never in the morning, but my husband did come across one on his morning run not too long ago. I feel like the chicks are fairly safe inside...

    Beginner question

Okay, that’s what I need to know. Since I am an early riser, I will most likely let them out whenever the sun comes up! Closing them up for the night is no biggie. I just shut the cats in the shop at dusk while the chickens are heading inside and by the time I’m done with the cats, the chicks...

    Keeping chickens contained

I’m not sure an electric wire would help contain the chickens. I think they need to be grounded to set a shock. It would keep the dogs out but that’s not your issue.

    Beginner question

Very cool set up! I won’t be using lights. The coop is mobile and is being moved daily within an electric net. The entire enclosure is to be moved every couple of weeks or so around the property. Too hard for me to figure out lighting too!!
