    Attack Rooster

One problem I've been having is my rooster loves to chase after my wife and two daughters (15 & 9). The girls can't stand Rocky the rooster but dad kind of likes him. Our 11 chickens (RIR, NH & Buff) free range quite a bit and they are afraid to go outside when I'm not around. Rocky never...

    Chicken hopping on one leg

One of my chickens began hopping on one leg yesterday. I have looked at the bottom of her feet and don't see anything wrong? Not cuts or anything obvious to me. Any ideas on what to do? She hasn't been free ranging much with the others and I will be isolating her from the others. Any help would...

She has food and water and a litter box to use. They will be going back out into our locked shed when the weather warms up. The...

    Kittens are born!

My 15 year old daughter had off of school today and i got a frantic call at work. Apparently our pregnant cat Greta was in the house and decided to give birth to 5 kittens in the top bunk. Everyone is healthy and she is a good mama cat so far. When i got home i got them set up in our shed. Now...

    Egg Laying Cat

We have a tomcat and two kittens that live in an igloo dog house by our front door. Today, when checking for our tomcat, we looked in the doghouse and instead of seeing our cat, we found 14 eggs!! I noticed our free ranging girls had been lazy in the egg production lately, this explains it!Or...

    Barn smells like cat urine

I've got a tomcat outside who decided its fun to pee all over the hay in our yard barn where I store the chicken feed, hay, and dog house. Any ideas on getting the cat urine smell out? I've removed most of the hay already but it still smells.

    Down to one new chicken

A couple of weeks ago I got 3 pullets to add to our flock of 8 RIR's & NH. Have had nothing but trouble. Youngest daughter accidentally killed one by dropping access door on the head of one of them last week and yesterday, I let the two out of their kennel in the coop and I came home last night...

    Bad Accident

Anyone ever get sick after getting flu shot?

A few years back i had a job working in a freezer where the temp was always about -15. Anyways i took the flu shot at work and got such a high fever i ended up taking my freezer suit almost off because i was so hot. I had a long miserable night that night. Needless to say, i haven't taken it since.

Leaving food in coop at night?

I have always been in the habit of leaving their food and water out in the coop at night, but I have always wondered why. They don't eat at night and it would just be an attractant for rodents. Does anybody put their food away at night?

    Warning-close coop early

Thanks for the reminder, I have been very lazy with our birds lately. Oftentimes not closing up the coop until I get home from work. Our dog is chained up right next to the coop which helps, but I will def. change my ways!

How often do you let your flock out?

I let mine out every morning and they free range all day without supervision. We also have a large run and in my opinion they are much happier and healthier if they aare able to be outside. Pretty much, every day I let them out although, I am sure that will change come wintertime. Enjoy your...

How to cover the kennel run?

I am in the same boat as you. I use a dog kennel for their run (even though they free range all day). My brother built a really nice wood roof on his dog kennel. (he stores firewood in it) I was going to have him help me build a roof by winter. I was also going to put tarp on the north and east...

    Insulating a chicken coop

I just was wondering if there was anybody who lives in the WI area who doesn't insulate there chicken coop? I have a new 8 x 5 Amish built chicken coop and 8 RIR's. I will probably insulate it but was wondering how many of you don't insulate? Thanks for any input.

    Hornets nest under deck

Quote: I have the exact same problem!!! My neighbor suggested I unscrew the board they have there nest under , turn it over and run like heck! That seems like an awful lot of work. I can see one side of the nest but the rest of it I can't get to unless i attempt to crawl under the deck. Not...

    Hardware Cloth

Thats what I was thinking. I have tons of plastic wire ties. Would that height also work well to keep rodents out of the run? So far I have had no problems but fall is coming!

    Hardware Cloth

What would be the best way to attach hardware cloth to a chicken run made out of dog kennel fencing? High high should I go with it also? Thanks.
