I was about to say - I don't cook or soak anything - just give it to them and they love it. Sometimes I think we make this chicken thing harder than it really is...

They should have it. Mine are 8 months old now and fat and sassy. What you have been told is correct - only starter/grower until they start laying - even hold off on the scratch until they start laying. Once they are laying - switch over to the layer feed for the necessary calcium.

Steve,
Where did you get those numbers? Everything I have read is 2-3 sq ft per chicken of coop space and 4-5 sq ft for run space. I have a 5'x6' coop and a 5'x9' run all under a roof. I do let my chickens free range some afternoons - but not every day. (I have 10 hens btw)
The trees will help your girls hide from the hawks. I would just make your coop more preadator proof for them at night - hard to build a fence that will keep a bear out.
I have 3 labs - 1 is 12 yrs old and she ignores the chickens - looks at them more as a nusiance more than anything! I have 2 7-month old puppies as well - they are curious but listen when I tell them no! They are good at herding the chickens back to the coop - but don't think I would leave...
My hens are from 18 - 22 weeks old and I have a few that just started laying over the past week or so. My EE is 18 weeks and she just started (have gotten 3 eggs from her). I hve some Buff Orphingtons that I dont think are laying yet and they are 22 weeks. I did see the "squat" as well before...
I used golf balls - worked pretty well - they got the hint! I get some in the coop here and there - seems like they wait til the last minute and just can't make it to the nesting box!
I would have to chime in about craigs list - I have found (and bought) older pullets there for $7. And our local feed store has them as well (although I was not impressed in the shape of them - looked a little mangy.) There are poultry shows around the country as well where people buy and...

If you're going to do it, might as well give her the whole spa treatment! I woudn't recommend cold water from an outside tap though. Warm water is much more kind and the chicken won't object as much to the water. (can't you put the dogs in another room for the short time it would take...
I had two that were the same age and one got eaten as well. I went out and found 2 "friends" of similar age to replace the 1! That's how it works, right? Lose 1, buy 2??!! At least that is what I told my wife!
I would have to chime in here and say mixed as well. I wish I mixed mine up more - I have 3 Buff Orphingtons, 3 Black Sex Links, 1 Plymouth Barred Rock, 1 Americana, and 1 Rhode Island Red. I want a Maran for the egg color to finish up my group (I am only allowed 10 chickens in the city)...
