How do you keep your quail watered in freezing weather? I gave them an open dish when their nipple setup froze but they just tip it over and get their bedding wet.
I have about 6 inches of shavings in the coop, i turned it today and got a strong wiff of ammonia. Is this from the bedding being to wet, or not stiring enough or both?
I ordered some cartons from Amazon but one third of my eggs dont fit. Anyone have a source of cartons to fit jumbo quail eggs? I have looked for chukar cartons but i can only find flats which is not what i want.
I have all Saxony and one drake that is another heavy breed. They are all 3 months old. None of the saxony drakes have started breeding. Is it ok to let the drake breed my 3 month old hens.
I have had 3 hatches so far. They do not hatch like popcorn as other people say but slowly over about 36 hours. How long after a pip should it take to start zipping? I know with others poultry it can be a while but i keep getting quail that pip but wont zip, just die in the shell.

I have a breeder cage with 2 roos and 8 hens. The males seem to breed each other to the point of being bald. The same is happening in a cage of all roos. Stocking density is 1 per sqft. They are 7 weeks.
Working on building a quail hutch and i could not find good information on a simple and cheap way to get the hardware cloth super tight on the bottom of the cage so the eggs roll. Well i thought up a way to build a cheap strecher, and it worked well. Next time i will build a stronger frame to...

I have been watching how my dad manages his ducks and planning how to manage mine which are coming in April. (Duckling pics i promise)
He used pea gravel which worked great in the summer. In the winter he puts straw on top. And keeps layering it. I stoped by the other day and noticed that...
I am looking into mixing my own feed and was reading the understanding feeds section of dave holderreads book "stories guide to raising ducks." On page 252 right at the top it says "excessively high levels of niacin can be toxic, so don't be tempted to put in extra for good measure. "...
I want to order 25 hatching eggs from myshire, but the temps here are about 15F. I figured i would wait untill temps are about 25F so they wont be prone to freezing. Does that sound reasonable?
Which shipping method should i use? It bothers me to pay 3x the price of the eggs in postage, but...
I got an argument with someone about having a heated inside pool for his two ducks and I wanted to see if anyone had experience with this. Most of our winter weather is about 20f but could get as cold as -25f for a few weeks. We don't really get wind in the winter. His duck house is about...
