    Hoop Coop Meat Birds

I am going on week 7 with my cornish X raising them in fall in Wisconsin in a hoop coop - and so far am more than pleased. They are obviously more comfortable in the cool temps, they have fresh air constantly and have a clean coop floor every day. We ordered 20 cornish female and got 21...

    housing for your meat birds

Last year I raised 15 cornish x in half on my coop. They had a 5 x 11" inside area and the same area available outside. I couldn't get them to go outside at all, and spent huge amounts of time scooping poop inside because it obviously bothered me more than them that they were laying in it ...

Have issues? Tell us where you live!!

When reading about problems, pests, feed issues, etc, it would be so much easier to relate to the problem if we knew where the person lived. An issue in Wisconsin might need a different approach than one in Texas or Florida.

    Heat and soft eggs

I had several incidents of soft shelled eggs during the big heat wave of 2011. After talking to other chicken people, I find out that I wasn't the only one that happened to. I offered plenty of veggies and oyster shells and fresh water Did any of you have that happen when it was really hot...

    Food for hydration

I heard a radio segment on eating for hydration in the heat. The lady suggested fruits and vegetables for the water content. Wouldn't you suppose this would be the same for your chickens? I have been giving them the lettuce out of the garden every morning. It's getting a little bitter in the...

How did you find your egg customers?

I'm not pushy, so how do you get people to buy your eggs?

    I want to plan ahead

Last winter was horrible for my chickens. They totally freaked out when I opened the doors for them to step into snow. Well, now I added a couple more hens to the group and want more winter space for them. This year I would like to build some sort of shelter inside my enclosed run for them...

My rooster attacked me. He's gone

"Simon" was 15 months old. Flogged my leg when I walked in the coop two mornings ago. Even though he didn't have spurs yet, it hurt plus scared the pants off me. And he was going to come at me for round two, except I chased him out of the coop. He was guarding his girls and I respect that...

"Free Range" is short for "Free For All"!!

I feel bad, but I have called it quits with the free range option. We have 17 acres but the 7 chickens choose to tear apart the gardens in the one acre house area. I just planted my veggie garden and refuse to have that gone too. And I have a 2 year old grandson who gets full of poop when...

    They'll never get along!!

I have had 5 GLW for 13 months(their age) - 4 hens and a rooster. A month ago I got 3 Delawares the same age. The GLW will not accept them. You would think the rooster would appreciate 3 more girls, but no way. The Delawares are smaller in size, which probably has something to do with it...

My chickens are house (coop) broken

I am just finishing day 10 where my chickens (5 GLW) have not dropped one poop, except for under the roost bar at night, in the coop. They have a run and I let them free range in the evening when I get home from work. Even when they go into the nest boxes they do not poop first. I am amazed...

    Hens upper beak is split

I don't know how it happened or how long it's been that way. She's been trying to go broody so I am handling her quite a bit and noticed it. Does it hurt her? She still eats, so that's not a problem, but I do wonder if it affects her at all.

    A general swap question

I am planning on going to my first swap in Fond du Lac WI and want to know what to expect. I'm going to be looking for a couple of pullets. How do I know a chickens age? Should I find a cage somewhere, or will a box be sufficient? Do I bring it into the swap with me, or get it from the car...

Can hawks attack while on the ground?

I know hawks can swoop down and snatch up their prey, but will they also land and follow on foot a chicken who ducks under a spruce tree or in the bushes?

I am not 'Managing my Flock' very well today

There is a good old Wisconsin storm going on and I have 4 GLW hunkered down under a big spruce tree because they won't cross the snow to get to their coop. I tried a path of straw, and the 5th one followed me (at least I have one smart one) but I made the mistake of trying to shoo the rest...

I joined the Scrambled-Pocket-Egg Club today

It finally happened. Had my chickens almost a year before I slipped an egg in my pocket before shoveling a spot out in front of the coop for them to scratch in. Must have bumped my pocket and pulled out goop when I got back into the house.

Where did you get your chickens?

There are many, many of you that have an assortment of chickens. Some of you have five chickens - all different. How do you do it? Do you go to swaps? Do you check Craiglist? How?

How many laying hens to supply a family??

I thought I was doing good with 4 laying GLW pullets. I get about 2 eggs per day, which seems to be standard for that breed. For some reason it just isn't enough. I don't know if it's the novelty of having home raised eggs that makes us eat more or what. I do try to stockpile to give to my 2...

    All you people are awesome!!

The best part of this forum is the wide range of people and different situations. I just giggle when I read about treating you chicks with collard greens ( not in Wisconsin) or raking up compost bins for forage when I have 17 inches of snow in my chicken run. Thank you all for having the...

    Young rooster showing redeeming qualities

I have 4 GLW pullets and 1 rooster, all about 7 months old. The rooster, Captain Cluck, has been on the 'watch list' because I think he is more than mean to the girls. However, he is showing some redeeming qualities. In the morning lately, when I open the door to let them out into the run...
