I had the same... I used sawdust only. I moved them into a baby playpen and at first didn5 put sawdust down as didn’t think necessary (they were in the same tub as yours but need that for new hatched chicks ) after a day without sawdust it smelt terrible!!! So, for me, it’s sawdust that helps...
