A little confused about progression of heat to no heat

I have never used one of those I always just use heat lamps but I have been thinking of getting a plate to brew new chicks. I know with the heat lamp you start out with the light very low so it keeps everybody warm and toasty and then you slowly lift it a few inches at a time as they get bigger...

    Old Hens

Hello All, I live in city limits so I have no roo's and only four hens. My conundrum is this, three of my hens are 5 years old the last is 4 years old. Only one of the hens is laying eggs, a 5 yr old and she has meat spots in like every other egg, no lie, no exaggeration there. So now that...

    Freeloading chicks

Thank you very much for your reply and I totally agree with you and that is why I am looking into how to call them they were good layers the first two years and after that they have just tapered off and I know it is not due to feed as they've had the same food throughout their life. Early hatch

So I had 2 chickens go broody so I bought fertilized eggs and placed 4 under each hen at night. The next morning one hen was off the eggs not broody any longer and the eggs were scattered. So I took the eggs and put them under the other hen. To make a long story short 2 more hens went...

    Duck stopped laying

I have a year and a half old female anaconda duck that has stopped laying eggs. She has been laying for about a year. She is eating well and free ranges when there is no snow. Wondering what could have caused her to stop laying since we are on to spring.

    Free ranging age

Hi All, It has been years since I have been a chick mom. I am wondering at what age I can put my chicks in the coop and let them free range all alone. Also I have an Ancona duck (female) and a Pekin (male). The female could care less about the chicks but the Pekin hates them. He tries to...
