    Hen wheezing

We have chickens housed with guinea hens so it gets quite loud in their barn; however, through all that screeching I noticed that one of my hens making very strange noise. I would describe it as wheezing. I also noticed that she is opening her beak when breathing, I did not check her nostrils...

Too many broodies ! What to do ?

Quote: Yeah, right, I take them out, they go back in. I take one or two for a walk to catch a worm, next think she is back in, trying to hatch some imaginary eggs. They don't even have any eggs under them, at least I don't see any, they perhaps think that they have them anyway.:jumpy

Too many broodies ! What to do ?

We are tired looking at these poor broodies - we have about 5 now. We let one to hatch eggs, now we have 5 more waiting for their turn. We need them to lay eggs ! Is there an easy way to stop broodiness, without using extra equipment, wire floors, etc ?

    Buying Chickens and prices

We have Buff Orpingtons and Silver Laced Wyandottes. Our Buffs are laying at least for 2 months now, they are turning 7 months in couple days, lay through pretty cold winter, mostly large brown eggs, and the barn is not even insulated. We have a few broody hens(all Orps), given a chance I am...

New York state egg selling regulations

Hi neighbor, so far I am under impression that everything must be properly graded, boxed, blah-blah-blah. As far as boxes - last year, before the chickens, I'd bought eggs at 'Honest Weight' coop in Albany and they were packaged in recycled cartons, it had seller's stickers over original box...

New York state egg selling regulations

Thanks gmc, they (cornell) did not mention the type of sellers/minimum quantities, where those regs would be applicable to. I was hoping to have a shortcut since we are not selling large volumes. The earlier mentioned circular is not easy to read, well, I understand that there is no shortcut...

We lost a hen again - was it a fight or something else ?

I can see now how serious it can get. Seems that SW are not as friendly as I thought, so far BO are being much more relaxed.

We lost a hen again - was it a fight or something else ?

We lost a hen again today ! Last time it was in December and we guessed the hen could be eggbound (?), since no injuries..., and no sick chickens. We did not think to 'autopsy' her....This time we saw 2 SW hens fighting couple times, maybe this one got into a fight and was knocked down, so the...

I just saw you are from Schenectady. I grew up in Glenville. Are you from that area? Hi Stephanie, we are not local to Capital Region, we moved in last year, so I am not yet familiar with Glenville and very little familiar with Schenectady, we are in a country part of Schenectady county. But...

    Meat spots

Silkiechicken you are lucky, because I have to answer questions such as 'how do you know if they are fresh?' , not to sound arrogant, but duh! 'chicken lays fresh eggs, you know' or as my husband suggested - 'say you have a computer program that checks egg freshness'. However, I was unable to...

    Meat spots

Now, will candling even show those meat spots ? Do you need some super-duper equipment to candle them so you can see anything there ? I tried with a flash light in a dark room and some of my eggs have a very thick shell that you cannot even see an air bubble in them. BTW, some people think...

New York state egg selling regulations

At the moment we have 37 pullets, so my guess the best case scenario is 3 dz a day, our latest record was about almost 2 dz, so I need to get rid of those eggs and I take them to work, but I want to be sure that I am not doing anything illegal. And we want to expand with another set of 25 of...

New York state egg selling regulations

Dear NY folks - does anyone sell eggs ? I tried to check Cornell coop.ext. site, which referred me to the following Ag. & Markets site http://www.agmkt.state.ny.us/fs/general/04circs/Circular854_eggs.html I am lost - can I sell without grading ? Is there some kind of maximum limit, as some...

Pullets - winter laying - BO and SLW

Thanks to all for your feedbacks Finding more of those small beginner's eggs now, I guess new ones are trying to lay. Another challenge is not to let them eat those eggs, my husband has a home improvement job to do - improve nests to hide the eggs from those hungry mammas

    nervous about eating the eggs?

I've eaten raw eggs from my chickens , gave it to my dog too. BTW, I was the 1st one to try . The only difference between my and my dog's consumption habit is that she wants to eat the shell and I don't. There is one delicious recipe I remember my grandma used to make with raw eggs , I will...
