I found myself taking in a new EE pullet from my neighbor who was moving and couldn't find a home for this one. I only have 3 in my flock a BR, RIR, and a dark brahma. (listed in pecking order.) They are all 6 months old and the new EE is about 6 weeks younger. I kept the new hen in separate...
Get a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and a flower base bigger than the bucket for your chickens to get a drink. (I use an oil pan I bought brand new because it has 5 or 6 in sides.) drill a few 1/2 in holes an inch or 2 up from the bottom of the bucket and set it in the pan, fill up with water, put...
I am putting a chicken wire fence around the garden and I wanted to buy this roll of 28in wire because its way cheaper. I know they are probably able to get over but will they? Or will they just see a fence and avoid it?
I don't have a pic but just get a length of 3in. pvc pipe and cap the top and attach an an angle pvc on the bottom so the food won't spill out...Works great!! And you can strap it to a coop wall while taking up VERY little space!
I have had my chicks outside for a few weeks now with a heat lamp on at night. Its starting to warm up now and the low temps are around 50 or so. Can I take the lamp out?
Unless you have a really hot pile they take for EVER to break down all the way. As long as there is plenty of other materials in your compost the wood chips will help make a really nice finished product though.
Well they are 6 weeks old right now and the weather is good enough that they are in the coop with a heat lamp at night and outside in their run and the yard all day. I did handle them a lot when they were little but when they went to the coop a couple weeks ago I didn't hold them everyday they...

Ya, same here. My chickens have a small covered run that is almost always open for them to roam my 1/2 acre but they stay fairly close to their coop and run. I would consider my chickens free range because they have the option to go where ever they want. I only have 1/2 acre but my...
I've been looking around at different homemade waterers and I'm going to go with the bucket and planter base method. Everything I have found says drill a couple small holes near top of the bucket with the lid on, fill it up and flip it over in the planter base and the water will fill up to the...
My chicks are 4 weeks old now and I have had them in the coop with a heat lamp since I got them and they have done fine even with night lows down to the high 20s. It seems like summer is finally starting to come around with highs in the 70s and even a couple days next week that are supposed to...

My chickens are fairly impartial to worms but if one does happen across one she will put her head high and run around the others to show it off and give someone a chance to take it before she gobbles it down. There are a ton of benefits of keeping a worm bin though. Start with a 10...
