    Darthi died today

My sweet hen Darthi died today after being sick for about two months. I took her to the vet twice but got no answers. She has lost about 3 pounds but she was eating, drinking , and being active foraging until the end. She was just getting weaker and lately my other three hens started pecking at...

    egg yolk peritonitis

My hen Darthi has lost 3 lbs over the last 6 weeks. I have tried to get some answers from 2 different veterinarians without much success. One vet did not know what those two round opacities are in the x-ray (one is underneath the thighbone) The other online vet said it looked like egg yolk...

Question about deep litter method for ducks

I read that with deep litter method I should have to clean out the bedding (I'm using straw) every few months. The water and feed will be outside the coop. However, if I don't clean out the poop daily, won't they always be sleeping on straw that is damp? I have 2 Pekins 4 wks old. Their coop is...

    Naked hen

My RIR started molting and now temps are below freezing. I made her a nice fleece saddle but the others are attacking her until I took it off. Would it help if the saddle was the same color as her? Any other ideas? The photo doesn't show how few feathers she actually has.

    Pale comb

I have 4 hens- 2 RIRs and 2 buff orps. Ruby, a RIR consistently has a pale comb. All the other hens combs are bright red. They have the same diet and free-range in the grass every day. Ruby behaves like all the others and appears healthy, no lice. I consistently get 3 eggs almost every day...

    Sick hen please help

One of my hens got sick very suddenly- lethargic, pale comb, bright yellow watery poop. I held her and petted her head and neck for about an hour with her eyes closed. She just jumped off my lap but is just standing in one spot. Could she have eaten something poisonous while free ranging?

Feathers bitten off at half shaft

3 of my 4 hens have this damage on tail feathers. I assumed this happened because for 2 days at sub zero temps I kept them locked up in the coop which led to boredom and pecking. However I wonder if this kind of damage is unusual- it is so symmetrical. Any thoughts?

    What is this?

Just under her ear, looked like mud was in the folds. I cleaned it out best I could with water and a Qtip. Is there something wrong here?

    Chickens eating insulation!

I have rigid foam board insulation inside my coop. This morning I noticed a piece obviously pecked at with a lot of it missing. Will this hurt them or just pass through? Any ideas on how to cover up the foam board easily?

    Saddle feathers damaged

My Buff Orpington Emmy has saddle feathers that appear to have been cut with scissors. My 4 hens all get along fine- 2 Buff orpingtons and 2 RIReds all 7 months old. They are in a 10x 10 ft run most of the day and I let them free range in my backyard when Im home. I have not seen any signs of...

    New member

Hi I'm Inga. I live in Loveland CO and am new to raising chickens. I have 2 Buff Orpington and 2 Rhode Island Red chicks one week old. I have named them all and am really enjoying their antics. At 3 days old a couple of miller moths got into the brooder and I was amazed at how they chased and...

    Keeping out predators

In my area I have coyotes, racoons and fox. I will have a fence 4 feet high made of half inch hardware cloth for the run. Can the predators climb the fence and get over it?
