I just processed 4 this Monday. I used a milk jug that I cut the top off big enough to pull the head through and the bottom off. I then put two holes in the sides and ran a rope through so I had something to hang it with. The rope was ran over a hook and I would pull the bird up to waist...
I guess it depends on why you are raising chickens. I am struggling with the same question with similar issue with one of our hens. She laid two shell-less eggs in June and has not laid since.
I am raising hens for eggs and roosters for meat. A hen laying shell-less or no eggs is no better...
I know your pain. My 3 year old has been attacked by our adolescent Silver Lace Wyandotte and he is now in lock down waiting for processing day on Saturday. I don't want to do him in, he is a great flock protector, treats the ladies with respect, and he his absolutely gorgeous! We thought...
I ended up getting some used chain link fencing from a friend and used that around my garden. I needed over 150 feet, so it would have been very expensive to buy. Keeps the chickens out fine, now if I could figure out a way to keep the rabbits out!
Will chicken sit in the Casco/Richmond/St. Clair, Michigan area. Had a friend's daughter do it for me last vacation, told us she was "just around the corner". When we returned and I asked her what we owed her, she told me that she spent $80 in gas just to show up twice a day! After talking...
If you want more than one, and they don't get along the best, there is another solution.
I have a 2x3 dog house with an added door and ventilation for each of my roos. I make sure they get locked up at night, but during the day they are each on a 8 foot leash made out of light weight...
Well, I guess I complained a little to soon, just got back from the coop, and low and behold, AN EGG! A beautiful grey-green egg! (I am keeping my fingers crossed for the rest of you)
I have some Barred Rock cross, 3 to be exact, that I hatched out last September. I have yet to see an egg from these three clowns. I am thinking that they are a bunch of free-loaders!
Got my first egg Monday, after just complaining what a load of freeloaders we had in the coop. Second egg came Tuesday, but nothing Wed or today yet. RIR and ISA that were brought home on 4/27.
All three of my good eggs hatched! The one that pipped at 4pm yesterday was the first one to show, but the last one to hatch. I set 4 eggs, three hatched. This is a real confidence booster, as all I had was a homemade cooler incubator. Once my girls start laying I am goint to hatc out more!!!
UPDATE
The pipped egg is still in that state, but when I went to check on it 15 min ago, suprise, there was a little wet furball from another egg that I thought had given up! It sure is a loud one!!
The old saying "Don't count your chickens before they hatch" is true, I had counted this one...
Got my first peep last night. At about 4 this afternoon noticed a crack in the shell. Around 8, there is a hole in the shell just above the beak. I can see it breathing, and it is still peeping. How long will it sit with just this small hole? I am not usually a worrier, but this might keep...
The standard is 4sq.ft. per bird, so 3 birds should do well. Make sure there is adequate ventilation, and easy access to the coop to clean, and plenyty of roost space. I am not sure about the leghorns, but my RIRs are kind of flighty and are very dominant, so make sure you do your research. I...
Friend at work gave me 4 "hot" eggs, built a homemade incubator, and dropped the eggs in last night. I am excited to see what happens, and my two sons are wondering were the chicks are already.
