Here are pics of the chicks from eggs left in a carton.
First out of the carton
Look at us
nap time
look at my sister zip!
What's that pointed thing?
Almost zipped!
Almost out
I want out!
I made it!
Gotta rest a minute!
That was a long fall!
Guess I haven't got my "land...
I've got 3 pips out of 8 eggs which have been in a carton since day 1. We just used a piece of styrofoam insulation to tip the carton from side to side for turning.
I had one buff orp egg from a batch received through the mail that was badly cracked. The membrane was not torn but the shell was too badly cracked to simply rub a little candle wax into the crack so I lit the candle and dripped liquid wax over the cracked area until I figured it was sealed...
I have a couple of spitzhauben chicks which are about 3 weeks old. They have seemed a little weak from the very beginning and seldom stood with the rest of the chicks. They would run or walk but as soon as they stopped the would sit down. Now I've noticed that one of them is walking stiff...
A while back there were a few posts about leaving the eggs in an upright position in a carton for hatching. A couple of members said they were going to try it. Any updates?
Day 21 starts tonight at about 9:00pm for the remaining 8 of a dozen buff orpingtons and abotu 8:00pm tomorrow night for the remaining six of a dozen silkies. :o
My last hatch I had a webcam set up with a chat box and really had fun with some of the elementary classes at the local schools...
I've got 15 buff orp eggs, 13 silkie eggs, and 11 blue orp eggs in the bator!
The last batch I had the eggs laying loose and rolled the completely over by hand every time. This time I have them in egg cartons with one side on a styrofoam block and just move the cartons from side to side each...
we hatched 15 chicks last week. One is a black silkie which was only about half the size of the other silkie which hatched. It has seemed very weak from the beginning. Mostly standing with its head down and wings drooping. We worked with it trying to get it to eat and drink. Yesterday morning it...
I ended up with 15 live chicks out of my last batch. I had 5 fully formed chicks which died in the shell. One was a spitzhauben, one was an araucana, and 3 were americauna. Most the rest of the spitzhaubens either did not develop or hatched ok, I had 3 araucana eggs, one hatched, one got broke...
Any ideas on this chick?
The light one in back is a blue silkie, the large brown striped one in front is a welsummer or welsummer cross with an unknown rooster.
What is the one with the black back and light sides? Any ideas?
re picsI'm at the end of day 20 and one of the spitzhaubens has a pip! Can't see it on the bator cam because of the angle but it's there!

I used to stick a few eggs in the old sears & roebuck incubator, keep the little pan filled with water and the temp anywhere in the "hatching range" (about 98 to 102) indicated on the thermometer that came with it. Turn the eggs twice a day and get some chicks. Never worried at all!
Now since...
I can't stand the pain we all keep going through when someone starts their IBW and gets those new fluffy butts without giving us up to date pictures
So I've got the web cam in the incubator now and when they start hatching I will move it in front of my "tvbator" for a better view
Here's...
I was gone from day 6 to day 10 and only candled a few before I left, thinking I would be able to tell more when I got back than when I left.
My light bulb in a box just isn't bright enough. At day 5, I could clearly see veins and a dark embryo "spot" in the white eggs and the light brown eggs...
I know I shouldn't have but I couldn't wait
I was turning eggs last night on day 4 and the candling box was right beside the incubator. The temptation was too great!
I candled 2 spitzhauben eggs and could clearly see veins!
I candled 1 silkie egg whcih was one of only 4 with no obvious...
It is -35 F this morning and I just talked to the mail truck driver. He said he had two boxes of eggs in the cab for me when he came from Minot this morning. The postmaster will have them set aside for me in a place they won't leak on everything if they are broken or frozen. The driver said the...
I know I shouldn't have ordered eggs for another month but the bator was ready and the weatherman has been 10 to 15 degrees low on his extended forecast almost constantly for the last 6 weeks.
This time he was off the other way! My eggs should come tomorrow or Thursday and the temp is -25 F...
