Nipple Watering System Made Easy
I wanted to share the watering system I made in about an hour the other day. All it took was a five gallon paint bucket, a hose faucet "Y" splitter, some old garden hose, a couple of garden hose ends, five stainless steel chicken nipples, five feet of 1" pvc...
McTee's Chuck-Chuck House
This project started out after having some "farm-fresh" eggs given to us by some friends. After one bite of scrambled eggs, we (the whole family) quickly decided to get chickens. I wanted to get full grown hens who would produce eggs immediately, but was...
I have a retail store where I sell what's called "70% Shade Screen" It is available in Black, Green, White, and Tan. I used it to cover the run for my coop and it is great. It keeps out quite a bit of rain/snow and provides great shade for a cooler coop!! It sells for $.50 per square foot...
I really like the fertlizer aspect of the whole thing. I just hope that I don't have a funky checker-board type lawn after moving the tractor each day.
How funny is it that the kids woke up this morning to a cock-a-doodle-doo from our former girl. There is no doubt now that we are the proud new owners of a rooster!!! You guys and gals hit it pretty much dead on!!
Just thought we'd share the info.
I think I'll do the Cornish X's for sure based on the speed of growth. I'm going to build a moveable tractor, probably around 8 x 10 or close and start with 25 birds, moving them a couple of times per day on the back lawn. I'll keep everyone abreast of the progress. Thanks to all for your help!
This is a great post. Thanks for all who have commented, your advise/stories are priceless. Orchid, your story is EXACTLY the same as ours. Those poor pullets scream bloody murder, and it looks like the most horrible act imaginable. Just the difference between the wild kindgom and humans...
I like the approach with no commercial feed. Who knows what 'they' put in it. I'd assume the county extension office would be able to help me with locally grown seeds??
I don't know if the chicken gods just threw the mean rooster switch, but we just went out to the run and our newly found roo had one of the ladies by the neck holding on for dear life. Looks like freezer camp is a extremely real possibility. We've never noticed this behavior before. What's...
I'm up in the air on the Rangers vs. X's. Everyone says the Rangers are easier, but the X's are bigger (meatier) and are faster to process. I have to say I'm a little bummed to learn that the lawn takes that much of a beating. I'd think with the sprinklers on constantly wasing the poop in it...
Ah, Katy it doesn't sound like your a dummy. It's actually reassuring that the chickens don't freak out when the water hits the tractor so long as there is a place for them to get out of the water. My lawn takes quite a bit of water (every other day) to stay looking nice. I think I'll try it...

Today 8:23 amDon't under-estimate the poop-mat, which will be solid right around the feeder if you have the laziest strain of CornX. And the birds will look pretty slovenly too.
We use Electronet around Ohio Hoop House Shelters...
